Tulane Holds Scrimmage

Tulane held a 116-play scrimmage Saturday. The offense racked up 494 total yards with 383 coming through the air. Coach Bob Toledo intentionally emphasized the passing game and the Green Wave signal callers responded by completing 66.7% of their pass attempts. While the offense moved the ball effectively, the defense still made their share of plays, recording 15 tackles for loss and 11 sacks.

Tulane received its fifth commitment Thursday from West Monroe quarterback D.J. Banks (5-10, 177, 4.45). Banks is the third in-state commitment for Coach Bob Toledo. Banks projects as wide receiver, cornerback, and/or return specialist for the Green Wave.

Getting Defensive

One of the primary concerns of Coach Bob Toledo this spring was to find replacements for Avery Williams and Frank Morton at defensive tackle. The Green Wave have just three returning players with a combined zero career starts. The interior of the defensive line has to be the biggest area of concern on that side of the ball. Fortunately, Tulane returns both starting defensive ends.

Trench Warfare

If battles are won in the trenches, Tulane’s offensive line should give the Green Wave a chance for success this fall. The Green Wave return three of five starters and seven players with a combined 80 career starts making Coach Toledo’s front five one of the more experienced offensive lines in the NCAA. Besides, somebody had to open those holes for Matt Forte last season.

Receivers Catching On

Unlike last fall when the Green Wave lost its top three receivers, Coach Bob Toledo has five viable options at wide receiver. Tulane has the fortune of having its top two pass catchers back, but must replace tight end Gabe Ratcliff. However, this group of receivers seems to have good depth and conventional wisdom is that they should only get better as they continue to mature.

Backfield in Motion

Fourth of July weekend has come and gone and football season is drawing near. For Tulane to improve upon last season’s 4-8 record, some relatively young and inexperienced players will have to take on expanded roles that they have not yet had to fill on the collegiate level.
