Leake in Control

Mike Leake’s four-year career has seen multiple threats to his spot in the rotation. During nearly all of that time is that he has continued to throw the ball for the first pitch every fifth day. He was the first starting pitcher in over twenty years to bypass the minor leagues before his MLB debut and is just now entering what should be the peak years of his career.

Cueto Makes Rehab Start

Still only in the month of May, the Reds are soon coming to a second decision-making time for their rotation. In the first one they opted to leave Aroldis Chapman in his closer role. Now Johnny Cueto is working to return from the DL while replacement, prospect Tony Cingrani, has impressed in his absence.

Louisville Comes Back for Win

After a year of superb relief the Cincinnati bullpen came into this season with unusual depth. That and a limited number of spots ensured that a good pitcher would not be on the opening day roster and many were surprised when said pitcher turned out to be Jose Arredondo. He cleared waivers and started at Louisville after posting a sub-three ERA in 2012.

Cincinnati had one of the top run-producing lineups in the NL before they ran into the Washington rotation. Now the Reds are still seeking their first win of their road series after the Nationals one-hit them in the first two contests of the four-game set.

The Reds won a 1-0 game last night to take their series from the Cubs and remain on pace with the Cardinals for the NL Central Lead. Latos is staring the season with a much better April than he's had in the past and Cincinnati is giving indications they will remain in the hunt for a another division crown despite being hit hard with early injuries.

Red Hot

The Reds took over first in the NL Central after winning 6 of their last 7 games. Joey Votto's bat is heating up and the past couple of games he's added a couple of home runs to go with his on-base percentage which is the second highest in the league. Though opponents limit offerings to Votto, he continues to find way to help the Reds win.

Reds Win in 13

The Reds and Marlins played a 13-inning contest yesterday with the Reds coming out the winning 3-2. Joey Votto plated both of their runs in regulation but the Marlins refused to let him deliver the game-winner and intentionally walked him before Shin-Sin Choo scored on Brandon Phillips’s sac fly. Zach Cozart entered the game with a hot bat but left with a hand injury after going 0-6.

Cueto to DL

The Cincinnati rotation did not miss a start last year but that streak is now in jeopardy as Johnny Cueto is expected to go on the DL with a strained lat muscle. Though it’s a severe blow to Cincinnati early season aspirations, Reds fans are hopeful it won’t be long term and it will likely give opportunity for minor league dominator Tony Cingrani to show what he’s ready to do at the MLB level.

Marshall Goes on DL

Coming into the 2013 season the Reds appeared to be blessed with great bullpen depth. That will be tested early in the year as their top lefty set-up man, Sean Marshall, went on the DL yesterday with tendonitis in his shoulder. Veteran Logan Ondrusek was recalled from AA to replace him in time to allow a run in his first appearance of the season last night.

After losing the utility infielder job on the opening day roster to Cesar Izturis, he's started off strong at Louisville to get in position for a promotion should the 33 year-old veteran falter.

Just two games into the season that plan has been put on hold from Ludwick’s injury and it appears Phillips will once again get pulled back into the fourth slot.

The 2013 MLB season opened last night and everyone is now down to their final 25 man active roster to begin the season. Cincinnati had some tough decisions to make in a crowded bullpen and they rewarded J.J. Hoover’s strong spring with a spot by sending veteran Jose Arredondo to Louisville. Cesar Izturis grabbed the final infield job after coming to the Reds on a minor league contract.

The Reds re-signed him to provide depth at Louisville and he acquitted himself well in limited Cactus League action. An injury in the outfield provided his MBL debut last year and the utilityman will continue to work for another opportunity in 2013.
