Simmons issues a guarantee

PULLMAN – Monday night practices this year have included rest and precautionary sit-downs for starters. That wasn’t the case yesterday. CF.C also turned the mic on head man Paul Wulff and CB Daniel Simmons. The defensive back, after watching the film of the USC loss, described the D’s performance as “sickening.” He said he and his teammates are going to fix it. And then he issued a guarantee.

PULLMAN – The Cougs were back to full-contact drills Tuesday as they look to salve their Stillwater wounds with a big Saturday against Montana State. Tackling was a major emphasis, but it was an INT by a young corner that got tongues wagging. Meanwhile, Jared Karstetter showed no ill effects from his concussion at OSU but injuries at DT and LB surfaced. And taking it all in were some NFL scouts.

The defense had a big day, with Myron Beck, Kevin Kooyman, Tyree Toomer, Chima Nwachukwu and Nolan Washington all making the highlight reel.
Where do Cougs stand at defensive tackle?

DAN SPITZ’S nine-game suspension from the NCAA is just the latest chapter in Washington State’s revolving-door depth chart on the defensive line. Counting Spitz, three steak eaters have been lost since the spring season. On the flip side, two others – both late additions out of the JC ranks -- have come on board. So with the start of fall camp looming, where, exactly, do the Cougs stand at DT?

IT WAS ONE of the bigger concerns on defense pre-spring drills, and with two d-tackles lost to attrition over the course of the spring, you might think things would be trending towards dire shape. The 6-0, 311-pound fifth-year senior played in four games during his WSU career but was expected to compete for a notable role in 2010. His departure creates an opportunity for some younger guns, one they already took to this spring.
