Following the Bennett trend line

THE ONE-AFTER-ANOTHER news this weekend of players leaving the WSU basketball team has prompted intrigue in the Cougar Nation. For two reasons, it really isn’t all that notable. First, players transfer all the time in college hoops, usually in search of more playing time. And second, if you look at the Bennett recruiting classes from 2004 to '09 you’ll see that these latest moves continue a trend.

Make that Brown AND THAMES leaving WSU

COUGFAN.COM has confirmed that a second Washington State freshman is leaving the Cougar basketball team. Point guard Xavier Thames is transferring, according to two reliable sources close to the program. Thames himself, when contacted by CF.C Saturday night, declined to answer questions. "I can't talk about it at this time," he said.

WSU HOOPS ROUNDUP: Bone to hit living room

ONE OF THE priorities in the coming days for Ken Bone will be to calm the roiled waters of uncertainty that have surrounded four incoming Cougar signees since Tony Bennett abruptly left the program. Wazzu’s head hoops man will take a big step towards that end this weekend with one of the future Cougars, traveling to sit in the lad's living room and meet him and his family face to face.

WSU hoops recruits: Shocked, uncertain

SCHOOL HAD JUST let out when Xavier Thames' cell phone rang. Tony Bennett's number flashed across his screen. "Hey, Coach is calling me," Thames thought enthusiastically. Four hours after pressing the talk button, the standout point guard says he's "still in shock" by what he heard. So are David Chadwick and Anthony Brown, fellow WSU recruits who received similar calls from Bennett today.

Brown to arrive on long arm of Dick Bennett

DICK BENNETT last coached a Cougar basketball game in 2006 but his impact on the Palouse is still being felt today. And it will continue that way long after Aron Baynes, Caleb Forest, Taylor Rochestie and Daven Harmeling graduate. You see, Spokane's Anthony Brown, who will arrive in Pullman this summer on the heels of a great senior prep season, was first spied by the elder Bennett.

UPDATED: Bennett on the 2009 class

TONY BENNETT CALLED his 2009 crop a complete one. He called it solid. He talked about the character present in the quartet of new Cougars. But he also said a recruiting class is, by definition, a great unknown. That, plus plenty of notes, quotes and insights aplenty in a comprehensive rundown on the Washington State class of '09.

FOUR SIGN WITH WASHINGTON STATE

TODAY MARKS THE first day of the early signing period in college basketball and as expected Washington State has signed a quartet of new Cougars -- two forwards and two guards -- to Letters of Intent. Brock Motum, a 6-9 power forward from Down Under, was the first to fax in his signed LOI this morning. Soon thereafter, three others joined him and officially became Cougars.

Earliest verbal in WSU history!

THE EARLIEST VERBAL COMMITMENT in the history of the Washington State football program has been landed by Paul Wulff and staff. Still only a junior-to-be, the coaches saw his film at his school during the spring evaluation period while on the recruiting trail. Invited to WSU's summer camp, he turned in an MVP showing in Pullman, and soon after earned a crimson offer. On Thursday, he became a Coug.

WITH THOMAS ABERCROMBIE's move back to New Zealand, Tony Bennett will have four scholarship slots to play with in his 2009 recruiting class. While emphasis figures to be on the post, given that Aaron Baynes, Daven Harmeling and Caleb Forrest will all be seniors this coming season, a look at who the Cougs are known to be targeting mostly points to the backcourt.

Big Game of the Day: Decatur vs. Shadle Park

After initially looking at the bracket earlier this week, I thought that the big game on day two tournament would be a rematch of last year’s championship between Kentridge and Ferris. But after an early upset sent Kentridge to the loser’s bracket, the new game to catch my eye is another GSL/SPSL match-up.

Rough road to top for future Coug Watson

OF THE FIVE RECRUITS Tony Bennett signed for his class that will enroll at WSU in the fall, perhaps none has had a more physical senior season than 6-8 James Watson of Stringtown, Okla. Stringtown High, a perennial Class B power, had eight games this season versus schools in higher classifications. And against Class B competition, the opponents' game plans were straightforward: Brutalize Watson.

HOOPS ROUNDUP: Future Coug talk of the town

THE OFFER by Washington State, and the subsequent verbal commitment by future Coug basketballer Patrick Simon out of Ephrata, undoubtedly raised a few eyebrows among recruiting traditionalists. A 14-year old? Really? Anyone who was at Cougar Cage Camp, however, quickly came to two realizations. It was fairly easy to see why Wazzu extended the scholie offer, and the kid can flat out hoop.

A lefthanded shooting guard, not yet a high school junior, gave his verbal pledge to Tony Bennett on Saturday, his mom told CF.C in an exclusive interview. His prep coach calls him an uncanny slasher with a chance to become special.
