Reds Win in 13

The Reds and Marlins played a 13-inning contest yesterday with the Reds coming out the winning 3-2. Joey Votto plated both of their runs in regulation but the Marlins refused to let him deliver the game-winner and intentionally walked him before Shin-Sin Choo scored on Brandon Phillips’s sac fly. Zach Cozart entered the game with a hot bat but left with a hand injury after going 0-6.

Ludwick to Undergo Surgery

The Reds re-vamped their lineup over the season by acquiring Shin-Soo Choo to lead off and re-signing Ryan Ludwick to clean up releasing Brandon Phillips to move into the number two slot ahead of Joey Votto. Just two games into the season that plan has been put on hold from Ludwick’s injury and it appears Phillips will once again get pulled back into the fourth slot.

Cozart Looks to Improve upon Rookie Season

Zach Cozart was a gold glove finalist last season while manning shortstop for the Reds regularly. In 2013 he’ll look to improve upon his performance at the plate with the pressure of leading off removed. Cozart is an aggressive hitter and though he doesn’t walk much, he brings good power to the middle infield position.

How Important is Leadoff?

The Reds kept rolling with an 8-4 win over San Diego Thursday. They have now won 13 of their last 14 and have the best record in the major leagues despite their leadoff hitters batting a combined .199. They increased their lead over the idle Pirates to 3.5 games before the top two teams in the NL Central square off in a three game series at Great American Ball Park starting Friday.

Reds Win Fourth in a Row

After a hot start Zach Cozart has seen his average slip during a recent road trip. It's expected for a rookie to experience challenges as opposing pitchers make adustments. In Cozart's case his home/away split suggests his slump was more an issue with playing on the road. A small adjustment to his swing and a return home have been paying big dividends the past few games.

Shortstops are Starting Tall for the Reds

While Zach Cozart embarks on his rookie season as a Reds starter, Cincinnati has two other highly rated shortstops in their organization. Didi Gregorius is now hitting .400 at AA Pensacola while Billy Hamilton is considered by many the highest rated prospect still in their developmental system.

Expect Mesoraco Sighting Soon

The Cincinnati Reds have not had a Rookie of the Year since Scott Williamson in 1999. They will be counting on two rookies to fill key roles this summer. Both will have ample opportunity to make cases for this year’s balloting.

It's Cozart's Turn

For a franchise known for stability at shortstop with Dave Concepcion and Barry Larkin, it’s been anything but that in Cincinnati since the latter’s retirement in 2004. Paul Janish beginning his season in Louisville means the Reds will start their seventh different shortstop in the last eight openers. Rookie Zach Cozart looks begin a new trend when the Reds open tonight.

Thunder & Lightning update

A few weeks ago, the Thunder & Lightning support program for the strength and conditioning program was revived. A lot of Rebel fans have responded to the plea to chip in to modernize the Starnes Center weight room for the "other" sports. Please, consider donating to this needed and worthy cause.
