Wisconsin Fingerprints

It's been almost a decade since Virginia coach Tony Bennett last walked the sidelines at the Kohl Center but when he brings Virginia to Madison Wednesday night as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, he'll bring a team that has been formed by what he has learned from his father, Dick, and UW coach Bo Ryan.

COMMENTARY: Bone is an upgrade over Bennett

DON'T GET ME wrong. I loved Tony Bennett. I was sorry to see him go. But as basketball credentials go, facts are facts: Washington State has just made an upgrade in its head coach. Ken Bone may not be as cute and cuddly as Tony, and his dad may not be as well known, but as basketball coaching credentials go, he's way ahead of Bennett.

COMMENTARY: Bennett's move is breathtaking

TONY BENNETT SAID today what really matters is the promise over time and commitment. What a crock. Passion, humility, unity, servanthood, thankfulness. Those were the five tenets of Cougar hoops that Tony Bennett consistently espoused. Then in one fell swoop he betrays his own credo, turning his back on his assistants, players and recruits, not to mention fans and administrators. What a hypocrite.

Moore: I won't be rooting for Phony Tony

SO WHAT ARE we supposed to do, rip Tony Bennett for taking the Virginia job or thank him for the job that he did at Washington State? I’m torn. It would be a better column to slice and dice him, and I lean toward that approach because of comments he made last May about his allegiance to the Cougs.

LESS THAN 24 hours after Tony Bennett decided to leave Washington State for Virginia, one of the school's incoming freshmen is also talking about leaving. Xavier Thames, a potential starting point guard at Washington State
next season, will ask to be released from his national letter of intent to WSU,
Thames' father said Tuesday.

Bennett changed mind overnight; Bone is eyed

TONY BENNETT told Jim Sterk as recently as Sunday afternoon that he was going to stay in Pullman despite Virgina’s lucrative offer. In fact, Bennett went so far as to say he wanted to donate $100,000 back to the basketball program. By Monday afternoon, though, Sterk was tracking down phone numbers for Portland State’s Ken Bone and San Diego’s Bill Grier.

Cougs, Cavs both bummed by Bennett news

BASED ON ANECDOTAL evidence, there’s only one group of college basketball fans more bummed out right now than the Cougar faithful. If message board chatter is any indication of the reception Tony Bennett can expect from rank-and-file Virginia Cavaliers fans, then the phrase “Bennett Ball” is going to need some marketing help. Meanwhile, the Cougar Nation mourns.

BENNETT GONE

COUGFAN.COM HAS CONFIRMED that Cougar head coach Tony Bennett is leaving Washington State to become the new head coach at Virginia. No other details are available but speculation on who will succeed him in Pullman will no doubt take off like a brushfire with two of his assistants perhaps being logical contenders.

CHARLOTTE -- David Chadwick, the 6-9 All-State forward from North Carolina who will be suiting up for WSU next season, has only vague recollections of the NBA ballplayer that used to hang out at the Chadwick house. But the miracle of technology has preserved a glimpse -- a classic one, in fact -- of the toddler David being “rescued” from an Atlantic Ocean surf by the Charlotte Hornets guard.

Poor ball care is quick way to tick off Tony

IF WSU UPSETS Saint Mary's tonight in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament, the box score is likely to show Wazzu winning the turnover battle. And if that’s the case, the roots of the victory can be traced to a dour day in Louisiana three months ago that was followed by an impromptu middle-of-the night practice called to order by one indignant coach.

NIT enticing but Cougs don't control destiny

OK, THE COUGS were more frigid than a Chi O in January. That’s now ancient history. Besides, the historic odds of beating UCLA back-to-back -- in Los Angeles, no less -- just weren’t in the crimson corner. So let’s turn attention to what matters: The NIT. “We would love to go to the NIT,” Taylor Rochestie said Thursday after the Bruins eliminated the Cougs from the Pac-10 tourney.

THEY DIDN'T CARE. Washington State didn't care that they're a team who shoots late in the shot clock. They didn't care their inside-outside game has been spotty of late. They didn't care UCLA went to the foul line 18 times in the first half -- and they took but three trips. None of it mattered. They just weren't going to be denied, posting a fast-paced, thrilling 82-81 road win over the Bruins.
