Cougar Conversations: Haws and Davies

While the Cougars won't be in the NCAA tournament for the first time since Coach Rose's first season as head coach in 2005-06, they are nevertheless happy to be able to keep playing. On Tuesday they'll host the Washington Huskies, who feature former Pleasant Grove guard C.J. Wilcox. Listen to what Tyler Haws and Brandon Davies had to say about Wilcox, the opportunity to play more games, and more.

Cougars feel sense of urgency

A few times under Coach Rose, BYU entered its conference tournament as a bubble team needing to at least advance once in order to have a shot at an at-large bid, but this year is the first time his team has to earn an automatic bid to have any shot at playing in the NCAA tournament. In order to win the WCC Tournament, BYU will have to get over the hump and finally beat some top teams.

Cougar Conversations: Tyler Haws

Not only did the Cougars have a couple disastrous losses last week, but Tyler Haws has had a giant target on his back as teams focus on shutting him down. The sophomore spoke to the media following Thursday's practice about getting back on track, dealing with how teams defend him, and the technical foul he had against San Francisco last week.

Cougars face daunting challenge at Gonzaga

The Cougars desperately need a marquee win, and beating No. 10 Gonzaga Thursday night would certainly qualify, but the Cougars will be hard-pressed to beat the Bulldogs on the road. They expect Gonzaga to be motivated after losing a heartbreaker at the buzzer last week, something the Cougars can definitely relate to.

A special group of guys

After serving a two-year LDS mission to the Philippines, Tyler Haws has returned to Cougar basketball with intangible skills that he feels can help him play a bigger role this year. A little wiser and a little older, Haws feels the leadership experience he’s gained will better serve the team, which he feels is a special group of guys.

Haws ready to be back in action

If there’s one area that the BYU men’s basketball team needs to improve on this season, it’s shooting. Last year’s team was very un-BYU-like in its shooting, particularly from outside. BYU shot 34.3 from three, the worst of any of Rose’s Cougar teams. However, the team’s shooting is getting a big shot in the arm this season thanks to the return of Tyler Haws from his mission to the Philippines.

Haws Talks About Talented Quarterback Cousin

Freshman basketball sensation Tyler Haws is making a name for himself on the court. Being the son of former BYU standout guard Marty Haws, the athletic genes run deep in the family. With his quarterback cousin Alex Kuresa committing to BYU and his older cousin Jake having played offensive line for the Cougars, it appears the athletic talent isn’t just limited to basketball.

Not a Typical Freshman

When thinking of BYU players that might mean the most to their team lately, one is not likely to pick a true freshman over the team’s more experienced players – including a number of juniors, seniors and players with various All-MWC honors. Yet, true freshman Tyler Haws has cracked the starting lineup, and has gone on a tear the past several games while playing like a seasoned veteran.

Haws Reflects on Being a Cougar

There were a lot familiar faces at Friday’s inaugural men’s basketball practice at BYU. Some of those familiar faces belonged to the many returning players on BYU’s squad, while others belonged to the former players there for a Cougar basketball alumni reunion. However, there were also a few unfamiliar faces.
