Coach Speak: Collins Okafor

You see 6-foot-0+ running backs and you almost assume that they don’t have the ability to break the big gainer or a long touchdown run. There are exceptions, like Eric Dickerson for one. Marty Kauffman, the head coach at Omaha (Nebr.) Westside speaks highly of Collins Okafor and even compares him to Dickerson. Both are up-right running backs that run tough and can make the long runs.

Okafor gets a call from T.O.

Any recruit wants to know what’s going on with a school in which they have interest. If you are a commit, and the school currently doesn’t have a head coach, amplify that interest by about a thousand. Omaha Westside running back Collins Okafor is waiting with eager anticipation. But a recent phone call certainly helped.

Okafor and Westside make early exit

There was definitely a little surprise or shock in the voice of Collins Okafor from Omaha (Nebr.) Westside when it came to their playoff run. Westside, loaded with talent, made a first round exit. Okafor spoke to Big Red Report about the season, the disappointment of the first round loss and of course about recruiting with an emphasis on Nebraska.

Okafor turning it on

One of the first commitments in the Nebraska 2008 class was Omaha (Nebr.) Westside running back, Collins Okafor. It's easy, at that point, to relax. The hard work is over. You have your scholarship and you know where you are going, but that isn't Okafor. He's used it as incentive and is going out for every game as the starting running back on the #1 team in the state.

Possible no-shows next weekend

It's getting to be that time of year when a lot of things typically fall on the same weekend. It's a matter now of choosing what needs to be done over what you really want to do sometimes. For a couple of in-state players from Nebraska, what they need to do might get in the way of what they want to do next weekend.

Committed and still working hard

It's not an inferiority complex that Collins Okafor has, but there is some sense of need to show that he belongs in a Nebraska jersey. It's not to anyone really specific, except himself. He wants to become the best possible player that he can be and he is working hard to do it. Okafor, who committed to Nebraska last year, is solid as ever and can't wait to be a Husker.
