Latos Wins Pitching Duel

The Reds won a 1-0 game last night to take their series from the Cubs and remain on pace with the Cardinals for the NL Central Lead. Latos is staring the season with a much better April than he's had in the past and Cincinnati is giving indications they will remain in the hunt for a another division crown despite being hit hard with early injuries.

To Deal or Not to Deal?

Now that 2012 is in the books it's time for teams to try and strengthen franchises for the future. The Reds are in an enviable position of having most of their personnel return from a 97-win season. Now there is speculation of further improvement before they defend their division championship. GM Walt Jocketty has shown he'll make the big deal and here's the results of recent transactions.

Latos Sharp in Post Season Tune-Up

Coming into the final day of the season the Reds are still in the hunt for the top best record in the league and the top postseason seed that comes with it thanks to a 3-1 win at St. Louis behind Mat Latos. Their 97-54 record is the highest win total since 1976. If they win their finale they will still need a National loss against Philadelphia to overcome the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Reds Win Home Finale

With two outs in the ninth inning the Reds had yet to cross the plate in their regular season home finale Thursday. Three batters later they came away with a 2-1 victory over the Brewers for their 51st win this season at Great American Ball Park. Todd Frazier got the scoring started with his 19th HR. Dioner Navarro ended the contest with a walk-off triple.

Reds Clinch NL Central

After a fifteen year absence from postseason play the Cincinnati Reds have clinched their second division championship in three years. Mat Latos was in control Saturday with eight shutout innings before giving way to an Aroldis Chapman "tune-up" in the ninth. Offensively Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips crushed solo homers before a three run eight inning rally blew open the game.

Reds Are First to 80 Wins

Chris Heisey has been a valuable outfield reserve for the Reds since his arrival in 2010. Last night he homered twice as the Reds completed a sweep at Arizona and became the first team in MLB to reach 80 wins this season. Mat Latos turned in seven strong innings for his 11th win. Meanwhile the second place Cardinals lost at Pittsburgh to fall eight games behind.

The Impact of the Reds Farm

Mat Latos came to the Reds for a package containing three of the top Reds prospects. Even though he's off to a slow the start the Reds will be relying heavily on him over the remainder of the season. After years of non-productivity the Cincinnati farm system is now paying dividends. Nine of the current roster spots can be traced back to prospect promotions and trades in the last two years.

Comparing Michael Pineda and Mat Latos

The San Diego Padres made a drastic change to the face of their team over the weekend by trading troubled but talented 24-year-old right-hander Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds for a package of prospects that they hope will help their team -- specifically the light-hitting offense -- in the future. Should the Mariners go the same route with their young right-hander, Michael Pineda?

Reds, Padres Exchange Young Talent

It's a rare occurrence in baseball when we see a trade that almost exclusively involves very young players. On Saturday, however, the Padres and Reds got together and exchanged some outstanding young talents. The star of the deal is clearly Mat Latos, who is headed to the Reds, but San Diego received an impressive package of young players as well.
