Padres Prospect Report: June 21, 2009

Sean Kazmar and Matt Antonelli spawned a ninth-inning comeback. Michael Collins had four hits and four RBI in a key San Antonio win. Ali Solis hits a grand slam and Danny Payne continues his hot-hitting ways. Erik Davis is clobbered in the second, ending any thought of a win. Chris Wilkes is perfect through four but not the fifth. John Hussey returns to the hill in the AZL.

Rajsich on young pitching talent

Dave Rajsich is the guy that many young arms lean on and go back to for advice even when they reach the higher levels. High potential pitchers Pablo Menchaca, Matt Bush, Simon Castro, Euclides Viloria, Alexis Lara and Tyler Mead all thank Razor for his work with them this season. He, in turn, shares his thoughts on these potential impact talents.

AZL Padres Pitcher of the Year

The Arizona Rookie League boasts a combination of big arms trying to find the plate and college pitchers who can find the plate, but need to prove they have enough “stuff” to make it up the chain. The San Diego Padres squad had plenty of both.

While the system was swept, there were a few bright moments and some not so bright. Brian Myrow hasn’t slowed since turning the heat on. Will Inman had his worst start as a Mission. Nathan Culp was strong but an error cost the game. Tyler Davis has done a tremendous job all year. Robbie Blauer has three hits. The best for last – Jose Mayi hit for the cycle in a tight game.

Laforest, Antonelli HR happy; Busch the mann

Pete Laforest hits two homers, including a grand slam. Matt Antonelli goes yard twice as well and Chad Huffman continues to scorch. Matt Buschmann has been the best pitcher in the system over the last three months. Mat Latos is dominant – for the first time all year – but it would not matter. Tyler Mead gives up a granny of his own in his first loss of the season.

Frank Menechino collects three doubles in a Portland loss. Bobby Basham is probably wishing he did not wake up on Saturday. Colt Morton goes yard three times in a Lake Elsinore shellacking. Mike Epping sends two out of the park in a Fort Wayne win. Eugene gets a grand slam from Mitch Canham and four hits from Brian Lauderdale – along with postgame quotes. The AZL Padres score 19 – ‘nuff said.

Manny Ayala sits tied atop every league. Kyle Blanks smashed two and Matt Antonelli hits the ninth granny. Daryl Jones goes perfect in a Fort Wayne loss. Shane Buschini hits a homer – but it is the only runs the Emeralds would score. Tyler Mead has another solid outing and Tyler Davis earns his first save.

Mike Thompson was solid over eight but Scott Cassidy got the win. Peter Ciofrone provides a walk-off in the 11th. Matt Antonelli nets a career-high. Brandon Gomes is as close to perfect as one can get since joining the organization. Jeremy Hefner stars while Eric Sogard get into the lineup for the first time.
