Martinez day to day

When you have a struggling offense, the last thing you want to deal with is an ailing star QB. But that's precisely what Nebraska has had to deal with, and probably will this weekend. Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson talked after practice today about the health status of Taylor Martinez as well as the state of his offensive unit.

"It's Huge."

You could easily say there is more pressure on Nebraska to win this game than there is for Missouri. After all, if Missouri loses, they still tie for the Division lead, and Nebraska has to go undefeated the rest of the way to win the North. If Missouri wins, Nebraska is two games back and essentially, out of the entire race. So yeah, it's huge. Everyone can see that.

Preparing for Texas Speed

Up to this point it seems that there hasn't been a team which can even come close to matching the speed of one Taylor Martinez. That experience is expected to change dramatically this weekend. Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson knows this all too well, and he knows that among many other things Texas has going for it, it has plenty of speed.

Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson has come to expect anything from defenses Nebraska faces, even if that defense hasn't shown something like that before. It's new looks, new schemes - basically the kitchen sink. It's just one of the many things they have gone over during the bye week as they get ready to open conference play. He talked about that after practice today.

Coming off a game like South Dakota State, the outside opinion might be that the offense isn't quite where everyone thought it was. But one game is just that. But as you will read from today's notes, Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson says this team will have something that will help them on the road much more than they had last season.

But there is a game happening, and Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson talked after practice about the challenges of taking on a new team with a new staff and yes, how the quarterbacks look right now.

Not much rust for offense

Bowl weeks can be good, because you get a little rest and time to heal up a bit, if needed. Bowl weeks can be bad, because that time off can cause a little rust to set in and timing which is so important on offense, can be a bit off and sometimes hard to get back. Not for Nebraska, according to O.C. Shawn Watson. He said there was a bit, but the team is crisp right now.

Getting ready for one of the best defenses in the country isn't enviable, but it's the job Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson has in front of him this week. Preparing for the Texas defense isn't easy, especially when your own offense hasn't exactly blown opponents out of the water.
