Hicks' Interception Caps Off His Gator Career

Every player on the Florida sideline has a story they’ll remember from Saturday’s Outback Bowl. The importance of Urban Meyer’s final game on the Florida sideline made it impossible to ignore the special moments that happened when the Ahmad Black’s interception clinched the game. For senior linebacker Brandon Hicks, it came through an emotional embrace with Meyer.

Trust Played a Role in Defensive Drop-off

It didn’t take long for Brandon Hicks to realize why the defense experienced a drop off this season. Besides all the talent that the Gators lost from last year’s team, trust also left. The inexperience at multiple positions found the upperclassmen trying to pick up the slack. They were afraid to make an aggressive play, thinking that if they missed it, there would be no one to clean up the mess.

Chemistry Was an Issue Early

Among the things that this 2010 version of the Florida Gators has had to go through in a season full of disappointments is a bit of team turmoil at the beginning of the year. A highly heralded class that didn’t mesh well with the older guys on campus caused a bit of a bump in the road in terms of getting everyone on the same page. It is something that senior Brandon Hicks thinks was fixable.

Team Looking for More Accountability

Almost every player that has come to talk to the Florida media for three weeks has preached execution of the plays being called. It’s something that coaches can show the team on film and in meetings that if they executed the play as called, the play would likely work. Too many times this season the plays have not worked. With the bye week, the team is looking to be more accountable to each other.

Unfamiliar Territory for Hicks

The Florida locker room feels like unfamiliar territory to Brandon Hicks. Distraught faces and frustrated looks aren’t anything he is used to inside the football facility. Since Hicks came to campus in 2007, the Gators have lost back-to-back games once before the current skid. The success of the program since then makes the past seem like a distant memory.

Season Goals Remain Intact

Brandon Hicks fixed his eyes on the long-term goals when Saturday night’s game came to an end. Getting blown out in Tuscaloosa wasn’t what any of the Florida players expected. The work put in preparing for the game made it tough to get over, but there is a sudden sense of realization around the players. All of their offseason goals remain intact.

Hicks Starting to Feel It

Senior linebacker Brandon Hicks is back in action and going full speed ahead now that he is recovered from an injured thumb. As it turns out, Hicks’ injury was worse than Florida coaches originally thought and he is finally ready to use his attributes on the field without the hindrance of a cast on his hand. Hicks contributed six tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a QB hurry in Florida’s win over Tennessee.

Hicks Leads Talented LB Corps

The Gator linebacking corps is a little short on numbers as Florida prepares for the upcoming season. That stands to reason considering the unit lost three seniors last year in Brandon Spikes, Dustin Doe and Ryan Stamper. Additionally, Brendan Beal transferred.

Change is Good for Hicks

Coming into the 2010 season it was easy to see that there was going to have to be at least one position change in the Gators' linebacker corps. The two best and most experienced linebackers returning for 2010 were SAM backers A.J. Jones and Brandon Hicks. Hicks started at the end of 2008 and Jones in 2009 when Hicks was injured. After a move to the WILL backer, Hicks is loving it.

Hicks Braces for Oklahoma Onslaught

There’s near unanimous agreement that the most improved unit on the Florida football team is the secondary, but to me that was to be expected. Florida played a very young group last year and common sense said they would make strides, though no one could have predicted the impact that Janoris Jenkins and Ahmad Black would have.

Ever since Doe’s return, he’s had to fight for his spot because Hicks has played so well. The Jacksonville-native has 32 tackles and a sack in four games started for the Gators.

It looks like a National Signing Day announcement for the number one strong side linebacker on the Florida recruiting board. Brandon Hicks, an athletic 6-2, 205-pounder from Jacksonville Forrest has two Florida schools on his final list but he already has made his choice. He just won't announce where he's going until Wednesday.
