OSU FALL FOCUS: Running Backs

OREGON STATE has not customarily had the luxury of multiple, plug and play talented running backs. But in 2010, the Beavs just may have four solid options. And of course, one of those options, is a Heisman Trophy candidate.

SPRING PREVIEW: Running backs

YOU ALREADY KNOW that Oregon State has one of the best backs in the nation in Jacquizz Rodgers. But as is usually the case when a team has a star in the backfield, it is the depth at running back that has Beaver fans concerned. Developing that depth will be one of the focuses when spring ball kicks off in less than two weeks in Corvallis.

Beavers fire on all cylinders, crush Huskies

THE OREGON STATE defense blasted the UW for much of the first half in Saturday's season finale at Reser. Sacks, tackles for loss, takeaways -- the OSU stop corps was busy indeed. The Beaver offense was only slightly less sharp. Midway through the second quarter, OSU had already scored two touchdowns and two field goals for a 20-0 lead in what turned out to be a 48-21 romp that wasn't that close.

FALL CAMP STORYLINES: Running Back

THE STORY OF the offseason has centered around Jacquizz Rodgers -- OSU's freshman sensation running back was handled cautiously after shoulder surgery. It will probably take a week or two into the season before the Beaver Nation stops holding their breath each time he plows full-on into a would-be tackler -- but Quizz' tale is not the only compelling running back storyline headed into fall camp.

POST-SPRING BREAKDOWN: Tight end

CORVALLIS--Ever since the loss of fan favorite Joe Newton, it's been a position with more questions than answers. The depth at tight end this year, however, could add numerous weapons to an already potent offense. The combination of blocking and receiving tight ends add options to both the passing and rushing attack, and might the two-tight end set be a consistent mainstay in this year's offense?

CORVALLIS -- With Pac-10 Player of the Year Jacquizz Rodgers sitting out of contact drills for the duration of the spring, and sophomore Ryan McCants going down in the last week of practice, it's hard to accurately gauge the status of the running back position headed into offseason workouts and fall camp.
SPRING: Six to watch on offense

EVERY POSITION ON OFFENSE for Oregon State this spring will have a storyline behind it. And these six are particularly compelling. Some are about starting position battles, some are about backup jobs, some are about hanging onto the top job on the depth chart. Here's a half dozen players to focus in on as Oregon State prepares to begin spring drills on March 30.

The good, the bad, the question: RB

FEW PROBABLY REMEMBER it now but Jacquizz Rodgers didn't begin the year as the starting tailback at Oregon State -- Ryan McCants did. With Quizz, a national sensation as a true frosh for the Beavs last year, to be contact-limited during spring practice to protect his healing shoulder blade, McCants will again be center stage. And many more questions loom at running back headed into spring drills.

Miller & Darkins can draw upon experience

CORVALLIS -- Two talked about position changes for this spring have already been well documented on BF.C. But what emerged today in a talk with Mike Riley was that the idea for the changes -- Gabe Miller from tight end to defensive end, and Will Darkins from linebacker to fullback -- were suggested by the players themselves. And both players have experience to draw upon in their new spots.
