Cougs bring fire to chilly Martin practice

PULLMAN – Martin Stadium has so much snow in it that inmates from the Department of Corrections were enlisted to start clearing the stands Wednesday. Fittingly, much of what they removed wound up on what will be the Husky sideline Saturday. Meanwhile, on the slick but clear Field Turf, the Cougs went at it with gusto. Big hits were all around. Plus, there was a welcome face back in the secondary.

AFTER LOGGING just 13 sacks last year, Washington State in 2010 is in reach of doubling that number for 2010. The Cougars have 23 sacks this season. Eleven of those have come from defensive linemen, with DE Travis Long posting a team-high four QB takedowns.

BEING RECOGNIZED FOR ACADEMIC HONORS is becoming a habit for the Washington State football program under Paul Wulff. In 2008, the Cougars under Wulff tied for tops in the Pac-10 for the most honorees named to the Pac-10 Conference All-Academic team. In 2009, they did it again. This year, WSU led all schools in first team selections with seven.

COUGAR PRACTICE REPORT

PULLMAN — If John Fullington needs a nickname, ‘the exception’ might fit the bill. True freshmen don’t usually play on the o-line at the Pac-10 level, let alone at left tackle. But that's exactly where he'll be Saturday when the Cougs face Stanford. Meanwhile, center Zack Williams, "embarrassed" by the trajectory of his shotgun snaps against Arizona, put in extra time on it Wednesday.

PULLMAN – Monday was a day of change, both anticipated and unanticipated, for the Cougs. As expected, the offensive line rotation was at full pitch with the season ending forearm fracture suffered by LT David Gonzales. But the coaches had another wrinkle in store, too. Redshirt freshman LB Arthur Burns made his return to the offense, and the running back position he starred at as a prepster.

THERE'S NO DENYING that Paul Wulff is mad. His voice takes on a degree of intensity when he's asked if his team is, in fact, angry enough to go down to the Rose Bowl and do some damage.

"I'm mad enough," he said during his Thursday teleconference. "They need to be mad enough. I think they can be; I don't question this team's work ethic, I don't question that they want to.

PULLMAN--As per usual on Monday nights, several players were held out of the short practice session. But that didn’t stop the Cougar D from starting to put in the game plan for USC. Last year WSU played the Trojans about even on the scoreboard over the final three quarters but the last time the two faced off in Pullman, it was a beat down, and that memory hasn't faded for safety Tyree Toomer.
