Scout.com All-Service Academy: Defense

Scout.com continues with its third annual All-Service Academy Football Team with selections for Defense, Specialists, and Break-Out Players. The panel who came up with the team totally whiffed on picking a kicker, instead deciding to name all three to the first-team. They each had a good season, with more highs than lows. Hey, even the kickers deserve some love.

The Briefing Room: Temple at Navy

Two of the hottest teams in the country collide this Saturday in Philadelphia, as the 6-2 Midshipmen take on 5-2 Temple in a game featuring two teams which can reach bowl eligibility with a win. The Owles are far from their former cellar-dwelling selves, and after nearly beating Navy last season, are well on their way towards winning the MAC East Division this year.

Navy Linebacker is Man of Faith

Ross Pospisil is a man who likes to take things away from people on the football field. From forcing three fumbles during the 2008 season, to picking off Rutgers quarterback Mike Teel in the waning seconds of the Mids’ 23-21 upset of the Scarlet Knights, Pospisil’s ability to generate turnovers for coordinator Buddy Green was a major factor in Navy’s defensive improvement last season.

For Navy’s Green, Speed is Key

Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green stills remember the 2007 season like it was yesterday. Forced to play a host of inexperienced underclassman because of injury and graduation, his Midshipmen defense ranked amongst the worst in the country, surrendering some 36 points and 439 yards per game. In fact, the performances were so bad that many Navy fans called for Green’s firing during the season.

It may only be May, but as far as Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo is concerned, his team has already made major strides in preparing for next season. Saying that he was “encouraged” by his team’s spring campaign, Niumatalolo painted a clear picture of what his Midshipmen accomplished so far this offseason, and detailed what they will need to do before opening with Ohio State on September 5th.

Navy’s Tim Tebow?

Ross Pospisil should have every right to talk about his on-field accomplishments.

After all, the six-foot, 223-pound inside linebacker has been a fixture on Navy’s defense for the past two seasons, finishing off the 2008 campaign with a team high 106 total tackles and 64 solo stops.

If someone had told me a month ago that halfway through fall camp the Navel Academy’s defense would be the strength of the team, chances are I would have laughed at them. And with a defense which ranked dead last in the country in pass efficiency last year while giving up an average of 439 total yards per game would you have necessarily blamed me?
