Dawgman Insider Blog: August 2010

Wednesday night was another spirited session in shells and shorts, but the hitting never stopped and there was strong play on both sides of the ball. As we are into the dawg days of Camp Sark, players are trying their best to impress the coaches and show them that they belong.

Thursday Workout Report

It was as nice a day as you could want in Seattle Thursday, as 81 Washington Huskies showed up for another competitive workout session. This one lasted anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours, depending on who you were and what position you played. Overall, the work rate was high and there was plenty of enthusiasm to go around.

Pre-Season Quick Take - Phil Steele

With less than a month to go before fall camp, it's now that point in the year when the pre-season magazines start tumbling out of bookstores and stands, and they all definitely have opinions all their own when it comes to where UW will finish. We'll be breaking down each of the top pre-season mags, starting with the one that claims to be the most accurate over the last decade - Phil Steele.

Coach's Corner - Offense Observations

Spring football is already half over, but team reps have gone up, hitting has increased a little bit. Progress has been made across all three phases of the game as they continually add new parts to their attack on all sides of the ball. The offense appears to be further ahead of the defense and defense appears to be further ahead of the kicking game.

Balancing health and aggressiveness

SEATTLE - In spring football, guys get hurt; other guys come back from injury. It's a part of what happens. But with the Washington Huskies, they are already fighting a tough battle with numbers; they don't need to have too many more bodies go down before having to call a penalty on themselves for not having enough bodies at the line of scrimmage.

Quantum leaps can be made

SEATTLE - Sometimes it takes a whole year to make that quantum transformation from player to star. Steve Sarkisian said Thursday it's possible for a transformation to occur literally from one practice to the next. And while he has to watch the film to make sure, he saw some players step up that he didn't see on Tuesday.

Stellar Class Offers Immediate Help for Depth

Nothing is going distract from this already monster signing class, unless of course there are a couple of more desertions coming down the stretch - and that is unlikely with this staff. Losing a wide receiver in Keanon Lowe is probably the one area where Washington won’t hurt simply because of the returning depth there.

A Fitting Ending to a Great Beginning

It looks as though Scott Woodward picked the right guy to turn around the fortunes of Husky football. Steve Sarkisian went a long way toward validating Woodward's choice with the Huskies’ thorough dismantling of a nationally ranked and totally overwhelmed California Golden Bear team. It was their best performance of the season and they saved it for last.

Oregon State routs Washington

Washington headed into their game with Oregon State this week with a slight chance at getting bowl-eligible should they win their last three games. However, those dreams were shot down early in a 48-21 rout by the Beavers who ran up 379 yards of offense and got big days from quarterback Sean Canfield as well as the Rodgers brothers.

Huskies Searching For Road Success

It's not the way Steve Sarkisian would have drawn it up. He said Monday that having a bye week after the fifth game of the season would have been preferable to the grind these last eight weeks have put on the Washington Huskies. After what was reportedly a spirited workout Sunday, Sarkisian insists his team is recharged after their week off and ready to tackle the rest of their Pac-10 schedule.

OK, the Oregon Ducks have won five in a row over UW, scoring 31, 45, 34, 55,and 44 points in those games. They run a shotgun, spread option attack that is difficult to stop. They lead the conference in scoring. The are playing option football in a league where no one else does. They are also last in the league in time of possession.

Oregon Rivalry as Heated as Ever

Washington’s Homecoming weekend welcomes back alumni with memories of football games past, whether proudly celebrating dominating wins or grieving over devastating losses, but the Oregon-Washington rivalry takes those emotions and multiplies them by at least a factor of 10. And it's not just the alums that share the feelings generated by a rousing interstate clash; the players feel it too.
