Linebackers looking to fill holes

Mike Cox must feel at times like he's robbing Peter to pay Paul. With the graduation of inside linebacker Donald Butler, Cox - UW's LB's Coach - didn't have a true answer at that position last year. So he put his smartest guy on the job, Cort Dennison. Problem was, Dennison was really a weak-side linebacker, a player who got his first start at Notre Dame in 2009 when E.J. Savannah went down.

Huskies back on the NFL Warpath

SEATTLE - Doug Farrar, NFL Analyst for Yahoo Sports, happened to ask Pete Carroll a question the week after Washington defeated Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl this past December. From 0-12 to a Holiday Bowl win, what does this say about Steve Sarkisian, queried Farrar. Carroll, now with the Seattle Seahawks, was clear in his praise about Sarkisian, his former offensive coordinator at USC.

Steve Sarkisian Monday Quotes

SEATTLE - Washington Head Coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the media Monday via teleconference to talk about the Huskies' 35-28 win over WSU in the Apple Cup, their upcoming rematch versus Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl, as well as the culture change that was brought about, in large part, because of the willingness of the seniors to buy into the methods employed by Sarkisian and his staff.

Dawg Blog - USC

After a much-needed BYE week, Washington (1-2) gets back on the saddle, so to speak, and back into familiar territory - at least for Head Coach Steve Sarkisian. This will be Sarkisian's first return to Troy since leaving USC nearly two years ago. After the Huskies' 16-13 upset of the then No.3 Trojans in Seattle last year, does USC have something special cooking for Sark and company?

We spoke with UW Head Coach Steve Sarkisian to get his thoughts on the injuries, as well as his take on the team bouncing back from their loss to BYU.

Coach’s Corner

OK, so UW lost the kicking game to BYU by roughing the punter, dropping two kickoffs, returning no punts, and snapping the ball over the punter’s head for a safety. They also dropped some passes, missed some tackles, failed to get a sack or even much of a pass rush on defense and were miserable on third down and terrible on their fourth down attempts on offense.

Fall Preview: Linebackers

Just as is the case with the defensive line, the linebackers are going to have to pick up the slack left by the departure of two productive players. They have no choice. The good news is that Mason Foster and Cort Dennison combined for the same number of tackles Donald Butler and E.J. Savannah had in 2009 - 137. The bad news? Well, if you just go by the numbers, there's plenty to go around.

It was as nice a day as you could want in Seattle Thursday, as 81 Washington Huskies showed up for another competitive workout session. Overall, the work rate was high and there was plenty of enthusiasm to go around.

Defense Improving without Significant Pieces

After three weeks of spring ball and 11 practices, the Husky defense is starting to exert itself in the weekly standoffs called scrimmages. Here’s a little progress report on the Husky defenders as I see them in practice. Even though they lost their two best players from last year in Donald Butler and Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, I think as a group they are making some great strides to fill those voids.

SEATTLE - In spring football, guys get hurt; other guys come back from injury. It's a part of what happens. But with the Washington Huskies, they are already fighting a tough battle with numbers; they don't need to have too many more bodies go down before having to call a penalty on themselves for not having enough bodies at the line of scrimmage.

More specifically, how the mechanics of the game are going to go. With that in mind, as well as the thought that he wants his team as fresh as possible going into their battle with the Bayou Bengals, it appears that full pads are done for fall camp.
