Red Hot

The Reds took over first in the NL Central after winning 6 of their last 7 games. Joey Votto's bat is heating up and the past couple of games he's added a couple of home runs to go with his on-base percentage which is the second highest in the league. Though opponents limit offerings to Votto, he continues to find way to help the Reds win.

Reds Win in 13

The Reds and Marlins played a 13-inning contest yesterday with the Reds coming out the winning 3-2. Joey Votto plated both of their runs in regulation but the Marlins refused to let him deliver the game-winner and intentionally walked him before Shin-Sin Choo scored on Brandon Phillips’s sac fly. Zach Cozart entered the game with a hot bat but left with a hand injury after going 0-6.

The Knee

Cincinnati entered this spring training without many questions but one of the big ones they had was the health of Joey Votto’s knee. Though comments from him indicate he’s needed a lot of extra work to prepare for their April 1 opener, the way he’s been hitting Cactus League pitching suggests he’s at least close to being back to 100%.

Spring Training Update

The long baseball season has already started for the players as every team prepares for opening day. Cincinnati doesn’t expect a lot of turnover from their 97-win season last year but they will spend the next few weeks making final decisions for the opening day roster. Everyone enters the spring with a few questions and here are the answers the Reds have gotten thus far.

Early Projections for 2013

While the rest of the baseball world enjoys what figures to be an exciting world series Reds players will wonder what could have been. It is certainly motivation that will make them hungry build upon their 2012 success next year. Cincinnati is in an enviable position with their top players locked in long term and the bulk of their roster under contract for the next few seasons.

The Business of Baseball

It wasn't long ago when Joe Mauer was considered the premier catcher in the game. He is a St. Paul native and was the face of the franchise when the Twins rewarded him with a long term deal. Now they've put him on waivers to check out the landscape for dumping his salary. This happened less than a year after three other teams committed $200M+ to first basemen.

Votto Makes Rehab Appearance

Though the Reds have built a seven game lead in the NL Central, there is still a lot of anticipation for the return of slugger Joey Votto. Last night he made his first rehab appearance at Dayton. He plans to make another appearance for the Dragons Wednesday before joining the team in Houston. Meanwhile the Reds kept rolling as Johnny Cueto became MLB's first 17 game winner this season.

Votto Out Another 7-10 Days

When Joey Votto went on the DL for a sugery to repair a torn meniscus last month the projected time of his return was 3-4 weeks. After traveling with the Reds and doing some rehab work he returned to Cincinnati Friday for a minor procedure to remove a cartilage chip in his injured knee. The Reds have gone 18-8 in Votto's absence and now do not expect him back until the second half of August.

Votto to Have Knee Surgery

Perhaps no lineup in baseball depends on one player like Cincinnati does with Joey Votto. The All-Star first baseman will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. The Reds are currently leading the NL Central and will be leaning on everyone to pick up the slack during the slugger's absence.

Vottomatic!

Lack of protection in the lineup has caused opponents to pitch around former MVP Joey Votto and limited his HR total to two through his first 32 games. Sunday he showed why that is not a bad option when he had the second three-homer game of his career capped off with a walk-off grand slam.

Votto Hits Lotto

Small market Cincinnati ponied up like one of the big boys when they inked their star first baseman to a ten year extension. The Reds front office had already shown their willingness to roll the dice by signing Ryan Madson and trading top prospects to beef up the pitching rotation. Those moves pale in comparison to making Votto the fourth player in baseball history to receive a $200M+ contract.

2009 Cincinnati Reds Preview

The 2005 White Sox improved by 16 games over the 2004 iteration through some controversial personnel changes. Like those Sox, the 2009 Cincinnati Reds might make a similar leap over last year's squad despite the losses of Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey, and Jeremy Affeldt.

Reds Should Look To Sell

The Cincinnati Reds should shift their focus towards becoming a legitimate force in the future, though several of their potential trading chips are not exactly lighting up the rumor wire. If the opportunity is there for the Reds to cash a veteran in for a few promising prospect, they should take it, writes Tyler Hissey. With a strong nucleus intact, better days are ahead for Cincinnati.

2008 Cincinnati Reds Team Preview

The Cincinnati Reds didn't make a big splash this offseason aside from the acquisition of stud closer Francisco Cordero. Nevertheless, they have a ton of young major league-ready talent, chips to trade in July, and a new manager with a history of instant success upon joining a ballclub.
