Cougs can't seize opportunities aplenty

BIG PLAYS ON defense and special teams kept Washington State in it against ASU. But the Cougars, forced to start a pair of freshmen on the offensive line, were outmatched on Saturday and Jeff Tuel threw two first half picks that killed WSU drives in ASU territory. The Cougar defense racked up six takeaways but the offense was challenged all day, and ASU did enough to win 27-14.

Practice report: Chima freshens up at corner

PULLMAN – Change was the operative word at Martin Stadium on Wednesday. Foremost, perhaps, was crispness of the workout -- the Cougars looked light years better than they did in Tuesday’s disappointing session. There were also a couple of noticeable personnel changes. On the offensive line, second-year freshman Tyson Pencer took some reps with the 1’s, switching off with Steven Ayers at tackle.

Charting the Cougar weight, muscle gains

THE UPDATED WEIGHTS for the Cougar footballers are in. The numbers, as they were in the spring, remain striking. There are many who have gained 15-20 pounds, and more, since last year. Then there are players who put on the bulk before the spring, then trimmed and repackaged it this summer to add quickness. CF.C charts the progression from fall of '08, to the '09 spring, to today.

NOLAN WASHINGTON WAS part of a 14-signee influx of Cougar rookies who arrived earlier this summer at WSU. Whether he and others in the class redshirt in '09, or if they're ready to play now, is one of several intriguing questions with fall camp getting underway on Aug. 9. Cougar assistants Chris Ball, Jody Sears and Rich Rasmussen all had the same message for Washington this offseason, he says.

POST-SPRING EXAM: Corner questions

PULLMAN -- Washington State has spent the past few years rebuilding the cornerback position. The Cougars entered the spring with eight corners on the depth chart -- seven of them underclassmen. There were bright spots over the 15 practices of the spring session, but one wonders if the position still poses more questions than answers.
