Great Scott! Lewis Wins MLB Debut

Scott Lewis proved the adage that good things are worth the wait. The left-hander allowed only three hits over eight scoreless innings in his MLB debut to help the Indians defeat the Orioles in Baltimore, 7-1, Wednesday night. Kelly Shoppach had three hits including two solo homers and Asdrubal Cabrera had three RBI. But the story was Lewis, who has spent so much time recuperating from injuries.

Lee Keeps Pitching Like An All-Star

Cliff Lee, coming off his fine start for the American League in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, pitched a complete-game win for the Indians on Sunday. The left-hander gave up 11 hits, but stranded seven runners on base in a 6-2 win in Seattle over the Mariners. Kelly Shoppach hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs overall as the Indians won for the sixth time in their last seven games.

Twins Keep Indians On Beaten Path

Ben Francisco and Kelly Shoppach each hit their seventh homers for the Indians, who lost their sixth in a row, 12-3, to the Minnesota Twins. Earlier in the day, the Indians designated for assignment Joe Borowski and Rick Bauer. Called up from Buffalo, Jensen Lewis and Brian Slocum pitched much like the guys they replaced, giving up six runs after Tribe starter Paul Byrd had allowed six runs.

Martinez Status Still Day-To-Day

No real news may be good news regarding Victor Martinez. The Indians issued a brief statement this morning that the All-Star catcher "is day to day with a mild left hamstring strain," and "no roster move involving Victor is being considered at this time." Martinez left Cleveland's 10-8 opening-day win in the second inning Monday. He was hurt trying to advance to second base on a pitch in the dirt.

Tribe Confident Despite Tiger Trade

It seemed like a logical question, considering the blockbuster trade made this past off-season that landed the Detroit Tigers a pair of All-Star players in pitcher Dontrelle Willis and third baseman Miguel Cabrera. It is what many fans and "experts" have been wondering ever since: “Should the Detroit Tigers now be considered the favorites to win the American League Central Division this year?”
