Alfred, five other Cougs earn Pac-10 plaudits

WASHINGTON STATE senior center Kenny Alfred has earned second-team all-Pac-10 honors, the conference announced Tuesday. The recognition for Alfred is especially notable in light of the fact he was playing on the lowest-scoring Cougar offense in modern history. Five other Cougars -- including true freshman Travis Long -- earned honorable mention honors.

Game was forgettable, Ledgerwood was not

SEATTLE -- Linebacker Mike Ledgerwood was an afterthought on the recruiting trail back in 2008 when he was crackin’ heads in obscurity for a small high school in a rural conference. He is obscure no more. With a whopping 14 total tackles – 10 of them solo – he was an eye-filling bright spot for Washington State in an otherwise forgettable Apple Cup.

Wulff lauds Cougar players post practice

PULLMAN–Paul Wulff had high praise for his Cougars after the second practice session of the week yesterday. “Maybe (it was) because there was no school, we didn’t have 7 a.m. meetings, they had 10 a.m. meetings -- but our guys are getting better, and they’re working at it and I couldn’t ask for more than what they’re giving right now. They’re giving a great effort and working hard,” said Wulff.

Offense sputters in 40-14 loss against Irish

WASHINGTON STATE stayed in the game throughout the first quarter. That was different than several games this season. But the Cougars still could not find a way to slow the opponent, in this case No. 25 ranked Notre Dame, during the second quarter en route to a 40-14 loss in their non-conference finale Saturday in San Antonio.

Practice report: Chima freshens up at corner

PULLMAN – Change was the operative word at Martin Stadium on Wednesday. Foremost, perhaps, was crispness of the workout -- the Cougars looked light years better than they did in Tuesday’s disappointing session. There were also a couple of noticeable personnel changes. On the offensive line, second-year freshman Tyson Pencer took some reps with the 1’s, switching off with Steven Ayers at tackle.

Charting the Cougar weight, muscle gains

THE UPDATED WEIGHTS for the Cougar footballers are in. The numbers, as they were in the spring, remain striking. There are many who have gained 15-20 pounds, and more, since last year. Then there are players who put on the bulk before the spring, then trimmed and repackaged it this summer to add quickness. CF.C charts the progression from fall of '08, to the '09 spring, to today.

POST-SPRING EXAM: Safety most consistent on D

PULLMAN--I watched every minute of every spring practice and in gauging position starters, it was probably the most consistent position on the Washington State defense, the safety spot. Xavier Hicks was an enforcer. Chima Nwachukwu continued to improve. A second year Cougar also solidified his position on the depth chart with his spring play. After those three, that's where larger questions begin.
