ROUNDUP: Cougar Football Notebook

JOHNNY FORZANI, THE speedy wideout from Canada who enrolled at WSU last week, has to be the most unique story in the nation this recruiting season. And now his tale takes on more intrigue. After reviewing tape, Scout.com’s West Coast analyst says he was struck by Forzani’s first step, his explosiveness and his size. So the kid was awarded a three-star rating. Here’s what’s remarkable about that.

FORMER WSU sackmaster Mkristo Bruce is livin’ large. The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed him to a two-year contract. And he and wife Evelyn are expecting child No. 2. “We are a Coug family all the way,” Mkristo tells CF.C. “My wife and I graduated from Wazzu and our son Mkristo Jr. was born in Pullman -- we gotta figure out a way to have our next child in Pullman to keep the tradition going!”

Cougar Football Notebook

WHEN JEFF McQUARRIE produced his remarkable feature film on the colorful history of Washington State football, he devoted a segment to great players who starred for the Cougs when the Ws were few and far between. Bernard Jackson and Jerome Harrison were among those featured. After this season of woe, I think two more names could qualify for the list. Brandon Gibson obviously is one of them.

11 Youthful Questions for Greg Trent

IT SEEMS LIKE yesterday when Will Derting’s career came to an unexpected end and Greg Trent, a true freshman from a small Dallas suburb, was thrust into prime time. Today, it's Trent who is the elder statesman of the Cougar D. Like Derting, he hits like a freight train – a fact driven home in the season opener against Oklahoma State when he knocked a Cowboy return man back to the Jurassic era.

WELCOME BACK, old friend. You've been missed and for far too long, since 2003 really. And yet there you were on Saturday in the Cougars' season opener, put in any number of difficult positions both early and often, and performing admirably. Mark this game, Cougar fans.
DAY 9: Cougars hunt, kill...and run

PULLMAN--Paul Wulff said when he was hired that Cougars hunt and kill. Well, add "run" to that list. Unlike many coaches, Wulff rarely runs players at the end of practice. He prefers to keep practices operating at an unusually high tempo, which requires a great deal of running. Wulff said it's all part of his desire to train the Cougs to have a little extra left in the tank in the fourth quarter.
