Tuesday the Rockies held a press conference to announce the Michael Cuddyer signing and the club added that terms have been agreed upon with veteran third basemen Casey Blake for a one year deal.
Loney, Blake Key Late Winning Rally

The young and Ramirez-less Dodgers are seemingly never really out of a game as was demonstrated to Arizona who cruised into the eighth inning with a 5-1 lead only to see Los Angeles score five times to win 6-5 and gain a game on every other team in the National League West. Manny Ramirez reached the half-way mark in his suspension, but as far as results go, they haven't missed him.

Blake Takes His Turn Playing Hero

If one had been told last year that Manny Ramirez would be suspended and that Andre Ethier would be locked in a death-spiral of a slump come May, one might have sold his Dodger stock and bought, say, Morgan-Stanley or something. But now after 41 games, they are working things out extremely well on a hero-of-the-day basis and third baseman Casey Blake took his turn last night.

The baseball gods seem to be testing the Dodgers to see if they really deserve the best record in baseball and so far they have proved worthy, although it may be taking its toll on manager Joe Torre's stomach.
the club wriggled out of a number of jams during a 6-4 win over Florida that saw stopper Jonathan Broxton again falter but not fall.

2009 Los Angeles Dodgers Preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers saw a whopping 17 players from their 2008 roster file for free agency in the offseason. Generally speaking, the focus of their offseason was to pull as many of those players back into the fold rather than scour other teams' free agent lists. Realistically, though, the entire Dodgers offseason was devoted to signing one of
those free agents in particular: Manny Ramirez.

Slammed In Seattle To Start 2nd Half

So much for building on that four-game sweep of Tampa Bay to end the first half. The Indians played their first game after the All-Star break pretty much like they did throughout May and June, getting swatted in Seattle, 8-2, Friday night. Aaron Laffey yielded a second-inning grand slam to Raul Ibanez. Casey Blake homered and drove in a run with a mighty groundout. That pretty much sums it all up.

Casey Blake doubled home two runs, Ryan Garko homered and Joe Borowski worked the ninth inning for the save. It was a solid game of well-played baseball after Cleveland's wild series in Texas against the Rangers where all four games resembled softball scores.

Casey Blake homered twice and drove in seven runs Monday night to help the Indians to a 13-9 win in Texas.
Casey Blake hit a two-run double and pinch-hitter Ben Francisco added another Friday night to help the Indians defeat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays, 6-1. Both hit bases-loaded drives into a brisk wind that on most nights would have been home runs. Instead, each bounced off the left-field wall for two-base hits that helped C.C. Sabathia defeat Roy Halladay in a matchup of Cy Young Award winners.

Cliff Lee pitched well for the third straight game and Casey Blake broke out of a slump with a homer and three RBI to lead the Indians to a 4-0 road victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. It was Cleveland's eighth straight triumph over the Twins dating to last season -- their best stretch against Minnesota since winning nine in a row nine from May 9, 1981, to Aug. 20, 1982.

Blake Gets $6.1 Million Contract

Indians third baseman Casey Blake received a significant raise Friday, signing a one-year contract for a reported $6.1 million. The 34-year-old had earned $3.75 million in 2007, when he hit .270 with 18 homers and 78 RBI. Blake asked for $6.9 million and the club countered with a $5.4 million offer. The two sides essentially split the difference and avoided going to an arbitration hearing.

Looking Around The AL Central

It will be interesting to see if Indians general manager Mark Shapiro's "hands-off" approach thus far this winter will play well next summer in the rugged AL Central. While Shapiro has not added much to his 2007 division championship team, the Tigers, White Sox, Royals and Twins have been wheeling and dealing in an effort to improve. Let's look around the division as spring training approaches:
