Small Ball Surprise Wins in 13

The recent past has taught Stanford fans that nothing good comes of affairs with UC Davis. The worm turned, however, Tuesday night in the home finale at Sunken Diamond that lasted more than four hours. Sean Ratliff, the Cardinal's home run leader who had left the park earlier in the evening, stunned the Aggies with a two-out RBI drag bunt to dramatically win in the bottom of the 13th inning.

Off the Schneid

The season of Pac-10 perfect futility is over. After losing their first six conference series of 2007, and seven straight going back to the end of the 2006 season, Stanford Baseball on Sunday took the rubber game against Washington with a 10-7 victory. Six Stanford batters had multiple-hit games, with plenty of power at the plate. Starter Erik Davis gave up just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings.

Eighth Is Enough

After letting Friday's game slip away, Stanford bounced back Saturday at Sunken Diamond with an 8-6 win over Washington that tied the series. The Huskies had the big stick on Saturday with four home runs, but Stanford strung together a big five-run eighth inning that broke up a 3-3 tie. Five Cardinal batters rapped multiple hits, while a sophomore notched his first save of the season.

Power Surge in Pullman Propels Card to Win

Stanford has yet to win a Pac-10 series in five tries this season. The simplest failing for the last-place Cardinal has been their inability to win a series opener. Stanford broke through Saturday in the opener of their sixth conference set with a 6-4 win at Washington State. A season-high three home runs and a complete game five-hitter on the mound allowed Stanford to overcome four costly errors.

Baseball Suffers Rare Loss to Spartans

Stanford started a six-game homestand Tuesday night just the way they wanted, picking up a quick 5-1 lead with early offense. Then disaster struck when veteran Cardinal pitchers floundered out of the bullpen. San Jose State surged ahead and held on for an 11-8 win, their first in nine games against Stanford. Also, a Spartan freshman injured during the game suffered a medical emergency afterward.

After a momentary blip Tuesday in non-conference action, Stanford continued hurling forward in this winless Pac-10 season Friday night with an 8-1 handling by Arizona. Wildcat sophomore Preston Guilmet went the distance and struck out 15 Stanford batters, while Cardinal sophomore Jeremy Bleich served up batting practice from the hill.

Adam Sorgi Interview

The bright light during Stanford's recent skid has been redshirt junior Adam Sorgi, who entered the weekend with a .396 average and 12-game hitting streak. Sorgi's surge is more remarkable considering his one-year injury absence after major shoulder surgery, plus a setback in February. The veteran middle infielder also talks about Stanford's struggles of confidence in the field and at the plate.

Baseball Bounces Back in Reno

Stanford Baseball did three novel things Tuesday: score throughout a game, pitch strong out of the bullpen and avoid imploding in the field. The result was a 9-4 victory at Nevada, ending the Cardinal's six-game losing skid. Two players had perfect days at the plate, and a third nudged his average briefly over .400. Junior David Stringer closed with two-hit shutout pitching the final five innings.

Card Comeback Can't Match Bruin Blitz

If you arrived for the ninth inning of Saturday's game at Sunken Diamond, you witnessed a flurry of offense with Stanford's nine runs and 10 hits following five runs and five hits by UCLA. But the Bruins had already built a massive lead and held on for the 16-11 victory, their second straight of the series. Stanford's pitchers were skewered, while the umpires added controversy early and late.

Back from Break, Baseball Blanked by SacState

We wondered what kind of team would show up after Stanford's two-week break for winter quarter exams. The answer was revealed Saturday in an awful 6-0 loss at home to Sacramento State. An unheralded Hornets pitcher was able to throw a complete game shutout against the Cardinal hitters, while Stanford's staff gave up 13 hits. This is not the way to start the spring.

Sunday was a good day for the Cardinal baseball team. Stanford completed the sweep of California with a 9-7 victory thanks to a 13-hit offensive attack and some impressive work from the bullpen. The win extended the Cardinal's winning streak to eight games and was the 2,500th in the program's history. Meanwhile, an injured player returned to the field for the first time in over a year.

Baseball Preview: Kansas

One of the surprise teams of 2006 visits Sunken Diamond this weekend as the Kansas Jayhawks take on the Cardinal in a three-game series. Kansas won a series from Stanford last season on their way to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. They're off to a hot start this year, but against far weaker competition than what Stanford has been facing. The series begins Friday night and we've got a preview.
