Twins Keep Indians On Beaten Path

Ben Francisco and Kelly Shoppach each hit their seventh homers for the Indians, who lost their sixth in a row, 12-3, to the Minnesota Twins. Earlier in the day, the Indians designated for assignment Joe Borowski and Rick Bauer. Called up from Buffalo, Jensen Lewis and Brian Slocum pitched much like the guys they replaced, giving up six runs after Tribe starter Paul Byrd had allowed six runs.

Byrd Pitches Life's Lessons In Book

Much like his double-pump windup, Paul Byrd's book isn't the norm. Don't expect the Indians right-hander to reveal pitching secrets in "Free Byrd: The Power of a Liberated Life," though there are plenty of passages dealing with revelations of a different kind. The 222 pages deal with Byrd's devotion to God, family and the game of baseball. It's interesting, amusing and poignant all at once.

One Bad Inning -- Yet Another Loss

Paul Byrd pitched seven shutout innings AFTER allowing Los Angeles' first four batters to hit safely and score. The Indians' still-sputtering offense couldn't catch up and so Cleveland concluded its trip west with a 4-3 loss Sunday, going 2-4 in a pair of three-game series with the Colorado Rockies and the Dodgers. Now it is back home for more interleague play against San Francisco and Cincinnati.

Byrd Gets 100th Career Victory

Paul Byrd pitched seven strong innings to earn his 100th career victory as the Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4-2 Friday night. Casey Blake doubled home two runs, Ryan Garko homered and Joe Borowski worked the ninth inning for the save. It was a solid game of well-played baseball after Cleveland's wild series in Texas against the Rangers where all four games resembled softball scores.

Highlight-Reel 'D' Leads To 4-0 Win

Paul Byrd pitched well. He had a season-high seven strikeouts without a walk. He didn't allow a run over 7 1/3 innings and relievers Rafael Perez and Masahide Kobayashi pitched shutout ball, too. But it was the defensive work of just about every player behind them that helped the Indians defeat the Oakland Athletics, 4-0, Tuesday night. Clutch hitting by Ryan Garko and Travis Hafner helped, too.

ALCS Quotebook: Paul Byrd

Nobody pays attention to anyone chanting, "We're No. 4, We're No. 4" in today's win-or-else society. Paul Byrd doesn't care. The Cleveland Indians' No. 4 starter is just happy to be part of a postseason starting rotation. Overlooked and expected to be overwhelmed in the first round, the veteran came up big to help his team defeat the New York Yankees. Now, it's his turn against the Boston Red Sox.

Who's No. 3 -- Westbrook or Byrd?

Manager Eric Wedge will have a very difficult decision to make in the very near future, one that might very well determine just how far the team goes in this year’s post-season. Hopefully, he won’t rely upon a “coin flip” or a “gut feeling,” two forms of action used in recent times by Browns head coaches to determine their starting quarterbacks.
