The unsung, Part II

EVERYONE KNOWS about Sammie. And it's not as if there isn't a lot of ink being splashed around the names of Kristick, Quizz, Hughes, Morales, Afalava and a host of other standouts with OSU two wins from the Rose Bowl. But Oregon State's latest victory hammered home a central point -- there are a number of Beaver playmakers, just off center stage, integral to this season's Pac-10 leading charge.

STRETCH RUN: Defensive line

AS THE SAYING goes, the offense gets the glory in scoring the points, but you win with defense. And the d-line unit will play a very big role in deciding whether OSU puts together yet another heady, finishing run and match that of the last two years. During this bye week and as the Beavs enter the final regular season stretch, a closer look at the stop corps -- starting with the defensive line.

Incredibly, it's thrice, into the breach

"ONCE MORE UNTO the breach, dear friends, once more." Shakespeare must have been a fan of the Beavers. And how do you explain a team that not once, not twice but possibly thrice will pull off a turnaround as stunning as what looks to be coming once more in 2008? Oh sure, we're getting ahead of ourselves. But is there anyone out there who doesn't think it's going to happen?

Beavs run over, dominate Cougs

THERE WAS ACTUALLY slight hiccup along the way but Oregon State dominated on both sides of the ball both before and after, and dispatched Washington State 66-13 in Corvallis. The Beavs outgained the Cougars by a margin of 4-to-1 in the first half, and yet it was still a game at the break. But two third quarter strikes put an end any doubt about who would come out on top. And OSU kept on rolling.

NOTES: "I'm not going to lie, it hurts."

THE STATISTICS PAINT a vastly different picture than the final score. Despite giving up three sacks, the offense had advantages in first downs, total yardage, turnovers and time of possession, but the last two minutes and 18 seconds was hell for the Beaver defense.

OSU FALL CAMP DAY 5: Full contact, injury bug

CORVALLIS--Finally! It was full pads on Tuesday, the first time the sweet sounds of pads and helmets cracking together echoed across the Willamette Valley. OSU has seen few injuries so far but on Tuesday one of the running backs got dinged up -- fortunately according to Mike Riley, the preliminary outlook was positive. Meanwhile, Keith Pankey had a nice day, there's audio from Riley and much more.

The Oregon State defensive line is packed with underclassmen and April was a time for the youngsters to make a case for playing time. Junior college transfer Stephen Paea impressed as well as senior Victor Butler, but the two deeps across the board remain muddled.

Major rebuild awaits 2008 OSU defense

THE DEFENSE WAS the driving force behind Oregon State's 2007 season, a 9-4 campaign that saw the Beavers ranked in the final AP poll for the second straight year. But OSU will have to replace the entire starting defensive front seven in 2008, and 14 starters all told. That's a herculean task, but head Mike Riley says there is talent in waiting.

There isn't a Bill Swancutt or Inoke Breckterfield type player on the roster, but if you believe there is strength in experience then the Oregon State defensive line is your unit. Only two starters return from a year ago, but seven players are back who have played in at least 10 games each last season.

It was just two years ago that the defensive line was one of the weakest positions in the program. But that weakness is now one of the team’s strengths. Despite losing two seniors the line returns two players who have combined for 38 starts and a host of players that saw plenty of game time a year ago.
