Sterk gives Wulff high marks on discipline

JIM STERK says he likes the direction Paul Wulff has taken with team discipline. Roster changes and suspensions since Wulff arrived have gotten loads of play in the media. While there have been exceptions, the vast majority of player scrapes with the law however during Wulff’s stay have been relatively minor, such as driving with a suspended license. And the team has made progress academically.

Sturdy optimistic; No. 2 O lights it up

PULLMAN – In a season where the punter has been the offense’s best weapon, a pair of Cougs on Wednesday unexpectedly awoke the echoes of Gesser and Riley, Leaf and Jackson. Receiver Michael Willis and quarterback J.T. Levenseller teamed up for two head-turning plays during a short scrimmage near the day’s end. Meanwhile, O-coordinator Todd Sturdy talked about where he sees the Cougs headed.

Cougars finding brief calm on the Palouse?

PULLMAN -- It was so quiet at Washington State's practice Thursday morning, you could hear a fumble drop. WSU's hard-driving coaching staff, concerned about mounting injuries, backed off the troops for the first time in fall camp. The result was a shorter, less intense and quieter workout than usual. Still, Devin Frischknecht, Tyrone Justin and Kevin Frank all made a little noise of their own.

Cougs getting tougher; wideouts have big day

PULLMAN -- Two-a-days, a preseason staple for college football teams for decades, have all but disappeared in recent years due to the increased emphasis on unofficial summer workouts that keep most BCS players on campus virtually year-round. Paul Wulff endured plenty of two-a-days when he played at Washington State in the 1980s, and he maintains that it made players tougher than today’s players.
