Jones may play, line ready to go

You could argue pretty successfully that as much as Taylor Martinez has been a huge impact at QB, that wouldn't be the case if not for a much improved offensive line. They have led the charge, figuratively and literally this season. And as Offensive Line Coach Barney Cotton said after practice today, they may be getting back one of their leaders from last year for this weekend's game against KU.

Bigguns getting ready for WKU

Even with a key loss like senior Mike Smith, the Husker offensive line is as deep as it has been in years. That bodes well for a unit which is trying to establish itself as not just better than last year's offense which was mediocre at times, but as one of the best in the conference. And they could feature a true freshman on that line this year.

Hot days in Husker land

It's hot, dang hot. But sometimes that can be good for a team. You find out who wants it and you get a better idea of where you are at with your team or in the case of offensive line coach Barney Cotton, your unit. It's as deep a unit as he has had since he arrived at Nebraska. He talked about that, the newcomers and just how he fits guys in where they are.

Cotton pleased with how far O-line has come

Over the Spring, an opportunity presented itself for all units to not just find starters if they had none, but also to develop some depth. On the offensive line they were able to do that, despite losing some key players for most if not the entire Spring session. The end of the Spring Game means this particular part is finished. As to where they are, offensive line coach Barney Cotton is pleased.

The love of smashmouth football

You don't have to ask a Nebraska fan what they think about the classic style of running where you basically line up and blow someone off the ball. To many of them, that's just good football. This version might not remind people of that, but it is certainly a change from earlier in the year. But you do what it takes, and everyone hopes this is what it takes to win this weekend.

The Line getting more physical

Hard to argue with an offensive line that paced the Husker offense to around 400 total yards against Florida Atlantic, 260 of that coming by way of the ground game. And no sacks to boot. Offensive Line Coach Barney Cotton talked about his unit's first game, the good, the bad and how players staying healthy is key to keeping the rotation as is.

Offensive Line Taking Shape

Offensive Line Coach Barney Cotton has been working feverishly to find out just who his top guys are. That process has had certain players practicing at almost every position on the line. It's not an easy process, but as Coach Cotton talked about after practice today it's helped to make his group more versatile. Now it's about finding homes for all of them.

Fall isn't a time to put guys in places as much as it is a time to see those players cement their spots across the face of a position. That is what is happening on the offensive line. Offensive Line Coach Barney Cotton talked about the battles for spots as well as talking about freshman Brent Qvale, who appears to be out for the remainder of Fall Camp.

Offensive line coming along

With the losses of Matt Slauson, Lydon Murtha and Mike Huff, while there is experience coming back, there is more that just went out the door. It's up to others to take their place. To that end Offensive Line Coach Barney Cotton says the team is progressing well, and even a newcomer or two is surprising a long the way.

Don't try and tell Offensive Line Coach Barney Cotton that the Oklahoma rivalry is dead. He played under former Husker Head Coach Tom Osborne when Osborne tasted victory as a head man for the first time against the Sooners. It's still Oklahoma, it's still a powerhouse match up and he's excited to see what his group can do.
