Quinn enjoys coaching in college

After spending 2001-2010 coaching defensive linemen in the NFL, Dan Quinn followed his friend Will Muschamp to Gainesville. There were rumors of Quinn making a return to the NFL as the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason, but he elected to stay at Florida. Quinn insists he is happy in Gainesville and not looking to take a job in the NFL.

Quinn Notebook: Freshmen Moving Positions

The Florida coaches are starting to experiment with some of the freshmen. Jafar Mann signed with the Gators as a defensive tackle but is now starting to get some playing time as an offensive guard. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn said that the move isn’t permanent yet, but they are moving some freshmen around on the defensive line to add some necessary depth.

Quinn Wants Fast Start for Defense

Dan Quinn knows what the stats said. The Florida defense ranked in the top ten in total defense during the 2011 season, but there were times when the unit didn’t look like it. Saturday will go a long way in showing how good the defense can be this season. It’s only one game against a lesser opponent that the Florida defense should dominate, but Quinn wants his defense to get off to a quick start.

Talent Wasn't An Issue for Florida Defense

The Florida coaching staff continues to try rebuilding the talent on the offensive side of the ball, but that was never a problem with the talent on defense. The roster that Will Muschamp and his coaching staff took over after Urban Meyer’s departure was loaded with talented defensive high school players. The unit showed their potential and got valuable experience during the 2011 season.

Freshmen Showing Promise for Florida Defense

Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn wanted to make the transition as easy as possible for his freshmen. To make that happen, he went back to a technique most use in elementary school. Quinn broke out flash cards to write down the responsibilities of the BUCK linebacker position for freshman Dante Fowler. The position requires lining up in multiple spots, but Fowler is starting to catch on.

Quinn Evaluates the Defensive Line

Dan Quinn's expertise as a defensive line coach in the NFL played a big role in why Florida head coach Will Muschamp wanted Quinn to join him in Gainesville. With only one game left in his first year at Florida, Quinn continues to push the defensive line for improvement this season. The first move came in sliding Sharrif Floyd back inside to defensive tackle.

Gators Prepare for Miller and OSU Run Game

Florida hasn’t done well at slowing mobile quarterbacks this season. Discipline caused problems on the field this season when the defensive line was unable to hold the edge and keep quarterbacks from creating yards when plays broke down. Discipline is being pounded into their heads every day in bowl practice, as Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller will be their toughest running quarterback yet.

Fine Tuning the Defense

Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has to be relatively pleased with his defense this season. Without a lot of help from the offense late in games, the defense hasn’t finished strong in those games, but they have played well overall. One area of concern lately is the play of the secondary who seem to be in the right place, but come up just short in making the play when it counts.

Focus on Style for Quinn

You have to stay with assignments and play what you are being taught if things are going to run smoothly in defensing the run game. There were times when all of it fell apart against Alabama. Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn talked to the media this week about staying in their ‘style’ of defense. Playing hard, but also play smart and within the framework of what they are aspiring to do.

Dan Quinn worked for Alabama head coach Nick Saban while the two were at the Miami Dolphins. Florida’s defensive coordinator had a good two year run and learned a lot from Saban in those two years developing a respect of the man along the way. The two meet up Saturday night in The Swamp when the Gators take on the Crimson Tide. Quinn looks forward to matching wits with the veteran coach.

For Dan Quinn the competition every week is the big thing. The name of the game is to win. With three sophomore starters up front, Quinn hopes to have a lot to enjoy as the season moves on.

Disguise is the Name of the Game for Quinn

When talking to the different coordinators at Florida, you can get the sense that they’re a part of the games as much as the players. Or, they would have you think so. Talking to offensive coordinator Charlie Weis or defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, they look as eager to match wits versus the opponent’s staff as much as the players want to play. On defense, Quinn wants to be a master of disguise.
