Leach trims roster, with more coming

AFTER A MONTH OF spring workouts, Mike Leach is trimming his roster. With WSU needing to get to the NCAA-mandated 105-player limit by the start of fall camp, several have been cut and some are planning to leave. In all, WSU will trim around 20 in order to accommodate the incoming recruiting class, according to well-placed sources at WSU. Of the known departures, one is a scholarship athlete.

Ex-Duck w/ big leg headed to WSU, says coach

FORMER OREGON kicker Mike Bowlin, who verbally committed to San Jose State a week ago, is now headed to Washington State, according to his long-time kicking coach and nationally recognized specialist guru Chris Sailer. Bowlin could put a jolt into Cougar kickoffs not seen since the days of Adam Holiday.

The Great Crimson Toes from Spokane

JASON HANSON, the ageless Detroit Lions star, is the most famous Cougar kicker to come out of Spokane, but he is by no means the Lilac City's only contribution to ol' Wazzu's leg legacy. Unofficially speaking, the record suggests that no place in these United States has produced more outstanding kickers for the Cougs than Spokane.

THE NON-STOP PIPELINE TO PULLMAN

YOU’D FIGURE HE would be a slam dunk choice. The guy was a triple-threat star who not only was an all-conference performer during his time in crimson but had the school mascot named in his honor. Yet Herbert “Butch” Meeker, all 5-foot-4, 142 pounds of him, didn’t stand a chance when it came to picking the quarterback for CF.C’s team of the greatest Cougar footballers to come out of Spokane.

Wagner waited years and now ready to shine

DAN WAGNER may be the happiest guy on the field Monday when Washington State opens its spring football season. For the first time since walking on in 2007, this jack-of-all-trades from Portland has a shot at serious playing time. He comes in as the favorite to succeed Reid Forrest as the Cougars' punter.

DAY 10: One of those days out on the Palouse

PULLMAN—Seems like every team has "one of those days" in spring ball, and this was that day for the Cougs. Taking the field for the first time since a solid Saturday scrimmage, WSU looked to be there from a physical standpoint only. For the first time this spring, Paul Wulff looked truly displeased, though the D did make some huge plays including two by 'backers Hallston Higgins and Darren Markle.
