Austin's Future Uncertain

Teryl Austin knows he might be looking for a new job in a few days. He could be forced to make a quick move to another city as a defensive coordinator or a secondary coach. That hasn’t stopped his tenacity on the practice field this week. With a life altering decision coming in only days, Austin feels like he owes it to his players to coach with the same intensity as the beginning of the season.

Austin Adjusting on the Fly

When the regular season ends Saturday, Florida defensive coordinator Teryl Austin knows he needs to evaluate his season. It has been his first year in college football since 2002, and Austin doesn’t hesitate to admit there have been adjustments. The real challenge comes in making himself a better coach next season after what he learned this year.

Defense Was Pushed Around

Florida has given up its share of rushing yardage this season to some pretty good teams, but in the 36-14 loss to South Carolina Saturday night, they were pushed around all night. Freshman running back Marcus Lattimore continued on his all-American season with a 40 rushes for 212 yard, and three touchdown performance. A bend and don’t break defense most of the year, they broke Saturday night.

Teryl Austin has been challenging his defense for the last few weeks to get off the field. First and second downs weren’t a problem for the defense, as they got the opponent into third down situations often. The issue came in getting off the field and forcing the offense to punt.

Gator Defense Does Enough to Win

It was a wild race to the finish line Saturday night in Jacksonville, and the Florida Gators crossed that line ahead of the Georgia Bulldogs. The Florida defense did some very good things, but also showed some cause for concern as Georgia racked up 31 points and 439 yards. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin was pleased with the win and saw some bright spots, especially with individuals.

In his three years as the defensive backs coach with the Arizona Cardinals, his players faced Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin every day in practice. He doesn’t see much difference between those two and Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green.

The Alabama offense scored 24 points in the first 24 minutes of the game, and then couldn’t score for the remainder of the game. Florida defensive coordinator Teryl Austin knows his defense has to start better, especially in games of this magnitude.
