Wildcats Hosted Tanking This Weekend

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State was very selective this weekend on the recruiting front, hosting a number of targets for the Sunflower Showdown with in-state rival Kansas. Inside Linebacker Trent Tanking was one of the recruits that visited K-State this weekend to take in the game.

Tough Call in a Tough Profession

The choice to let Nick Holt, Mike Cox, and Jeff Mills go had to be the hardest decision in Steve Sarkisian’s life, much less his professional career. The performance by the Husky defense in the Alamo Bowl basically gave him no alternative. Regardless, letting go of one of his good friends, as well as three families is no easy call.

SEATTLE - Dawgman.com learned this morning that Washington Defensive Coordinator Nick Holt, Linebackers Coach Mike Cox, and Safeties Coach Jeff Mills will not be retained for 2012. Head Coach Steve Sarkisian made the decision after Washington's 67-56 loss to Baylor in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29th, a game in which the Huskies also gave up a school-record 777 yards.

This Saturday’s Apple Cup at the Clink will be the last game for my favorite Husky, Cort Dennison, and rest of this year’s graduating seniors. They get to go “downtown” and host their biggest rival, the Washington State Cougars, and if any group of Huskies ever deserves to go out with one last win, it’s this group.

Most of all, Cort loves the fact that Gilliland isn’t afraid to get up in a guy’s grill and smack them in the face.

Seniors Have Chance to Re-establish Tradition

This year’s Husky senior class is a mix of two classes, with seven true seniors from the class of 2008 and 12 red-shirt, or fifth year, players from the class of 2007. There are five who entered the program as walk-ons and of the 19 scholarshipped seniors, 10 have started at least one game. They are all from the Tyrone Willingham era, and all of them were here for that simply awful 0-fer season.

Post-Spring Review: Outside Linebacker

Looking at the numbers, this year's crop of Washington's outside linebackers have Bigfoot-sized shoes to fill. The statistical hole left by seniors Mason Foster and Victor Aiyewa is one Andy Dufresne would be proud of. We're talking careers that totaled 504 tackles, 62 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks, as well as 56 combined starts. Wow. But statistics only tell one side of the story.

Linebackers looking to fill holes

Mike Cox must feel at times like he's robbing Peter to pay Paul. With the graduation of inside linebacker Donald Butler, Cox - UW's LB's Coach - didn't have a true answer at that position last year. So he put his smartest guy on the job, Cort Dennison. Problem was, Dennison was really a weak-side linebacker, a player who got his first start at Notre Dame in 2009 when E.J. Savannah went down.

Washington won their last three games in a row, and not only earned a trip to the Holiday Bowl, but they got a huge measure of revenge in beating Nebraska. That is a great reward not only for a team that worked so hard to overcome a three-game losing streak, but also for a program that has not been to the post season in nearly a decade.
