The Rancid Edition

Who doesn’t love the East Bay? And if you love the East Bay, then you love the best band ever out of the East Bay. Rancid. They also write the best songs about the East Bay. And they live right in Berkeley. They wrote the seminal East Bay punk smash hit, “Journey To The End Of The East Bay”, and they did smash YouTube hit “Another East Bay Night.”

Liveblog: Stanford 82, OSU 72 (Final)

If only Stanford played Oregon State every game. With a 48-point second half, the Card evened out their Pac-12 record at 7-7 (16-11 overall), downing the host Beavers, 82-72. All five Stanford starters finished in double figures, so top billing goes to 21st birthday boy Aaron Bright. On beautiful passing, Bright added six assists against only one turnover, and had a game-clinching three late.

The Mrs. Milton Found Him Boring Too Edition

I noticed in the student shots during the Sparky game on Saturday a tee shirt that read “Fear the Fork”, which is just as bad as our stupid “Fear the Tree” tee shirts. There is a fine line between clever and stupid, and these tee shirts hopscotch it. I think they are especially awkward for Sparky, since the last time their two big sports won a meaningful game was during the Clinton administration.

Liveblog: Stanford 27, Arizona 26 (Half)

The Stanford offense started the first half looking like Beauty, but ended the period looking like Beast. Yet the defensive effort has been consistent throughout, and the Card hold a 27-26 halftime lead at No. 7 Arizona in what would be their biggest win of the season.

A huge tip of the ole Stanford Basketball cap to the Buck/Cardinal Club for the added benefit to seat license-gauged season ticket holders of the hand-delivered double Mimosa. Nothing goes down as well with Beaver at noon as a stiff mimosa. What? You didn’t get one delivered to your seats just before tipoff. We did. Then again, it is who-you-know, isn’t it?

The “Last One To Die” Edition

I was going to call this the “Cats and Dogs Sleeping Together” edition, but then on the way up 101 after the game Saturday night, the lead-in for the accounting firm of Platz and Shiller coming out of commercial was “Last One To Die” by Rancid, which staunched my aneurism a bit. Who knew John Platz was a closet Ska-Punk? Dude is full of surprises.

The Beat The Migratory Water Foul Edition

For most of my Stanford life, there has been a point each fall when Stanford fans gladly turn their focus from football to basketball. It’s usually been the first week of November. Not so much the last four or five years, when football has entered the realm of ludicrously good (a stratosphere typically reserved only for water polo and most women’s sports on The Farm).

Stanford/Minnesota second-half blog

Twenty one years after their 1991 NIT title, it was Stanford hands again cutting down the nets at Madison Square on Thursday night. A physical Stanford defense bruised and battered Minnesota into submission, as the Cardinal ends its season 26-11 and, with a 75-51 victory over Minnesota, NIT champions.

Both defenses have outshined the offenses, but Bright’s shooting and Stanford’s defensive size have made the difference early.

Booties have been knocking the NIT, but I think that's shortsighted. The tournament is on national TV, for one, and who knows what high school kid may be watching? The more wins, the more exposure. Plus, the practice in live competition, in a one-and-done tournament format no less, is invaluable in college athletics, where minutes are so carefully regulated.
