Furney's Fated Kick: Frame by Frame

IT'S A KICK that will live forever in the lore of the Apple Cup In 1982, Chuck Nelson was wide right and no one has ever forgotten. On Friday, Andrew Furney was perfect from 27-yards-out, capping a furious Cougar comeback in a game that ranks among the most exciting in the 105 years the two teams have been playing. Photographer Greg Davis captured every second of Furney's now-legendary trey.

DAY 16: Leach cracks whip; special teams woes

PULLMAN–The Cougs came out Sunday lacking vigor, hustle and effort. Fighting sweltering heat, the Wazzu offense sputtered and failed to establish any sort of tempo. And Mike Leach wasn't pleased. He proceeded to make it very clear to the players that if the Cougs are going to go anywhere this year, it will be predicated on effort and hustle. Plus, a ST report and a corner was sporting a new cast.

SCRIMMAGE 1: Explosive offense on display

PULLMAN -- Offense dominated the afternoon Saturday as the Cougars suited up for a live scrimmage for fans to enjoy. Senior quarterback Jeff Tuel and sophomore Connor Halliday were prolific, hitting a variety of wide receivers for scores all afternoon. Temperatures exceeded 90 degrees once again, but Washington State fans were not phased as more than 1,000 spectators attended at Martin Stadium.

Bontemps & other notable depth chart notes

A POST-SPRING DEPTH CHART was released by Washington State this week for Pac-12 Media Day. Keep in mind it doesn’t list any of the new arrivals, such as WR Gabriel Marks and NT Ioane Gauta for example, who are expected to challenge for playing time when fall camp gets underway Aug. 2. Still, it does yield plenty of intriguing data, starting with walk-on wide receiver Bennett Bontemps.

Rating the strength of WSU's commitments on D

JANUARY IS HOLD-ON time in recruiting. For WSU in recent years, it’s been when the competition missed on a few of the guys they had rated higher on their boards -- and then came charging after the Cougs’ verbals. Immediate needs also come into sharper focus in January, often leading to a full court press on JUCO verbals. But the Cougars appear to be in solid shape with their defensive pledges.
