Watkins experienced in secondary

Jaylen Watkins is heading into his third year in Will Muschamp’s defense and knows all the positions in the secondary. It’s that flexibility that could force him to move from cornerback to safety in the fall. The Gators return three experienced cornerbacks, and after losing two safeties, Watkins is the logical choice to move to safety, adding another experienced player to the group.

Watkins a part of a vastly improved secondary

It is a mixture of a lot of things but there is no denying that the Florida secondary is one of the more improved units on the team and may very well be the best unit. It is deep and experienced now, a big difference from a year ago when they were just trying to find their way after all being thrown to the wolves. Junior cornerback Jaylen Watkins would put his crew out there against anyone.

Watkins Finding Motivation from a Year Ago

It may have been the biggest of turning points for Florida junior cornerback Jaylen Watkins. A year ago, in the Georgia game, Watkins was victimized by a fourth down pass for a touchdown in a game that was decided by less than a touchdown. Watkins spent a while early in the year at safety, was just getting a little more comfortable at corner, but this moment changed everything.

Film Study Paying Off for Defense

If you ask Jaylen Watkins when he felt good about scoring a touchdown on the interception return he had for a TD on Saturday, he would tell you when they lined up for the play. Film study allowed Watkins to basically have an inside look at the play before it ever happened and enough for him to envision crossing the goal line before the ball was even snapped.

Familiarity Breeds Success For Watkins

When fans and media were allowed to watch a couple of Florida Gator football practices last week, they were treated to a few welcome sites. One of those was the play of junior cornerback Jaylen Watkins. Watkins has settled in now at the position after jumping back and forth a year ago between safety, corner, and nickel, and seems to be coming into his own.

Watkins Preparing for Two Quarterbacks

The challenge for Jaylen Watkins and the Florida secondary this weekend is one they faced a lot in practice last season. Jordan Jefferson returning to LSU means the Gators have to be cognizant of which quarterback is on the field before the snap. Jefferson brings the threat to run while starting quarterback Jarrett Lee has managed the offense and only thrown one interception this season.

Secondary Thriving Under Pressure

Will Muschamp didn’t waste time putting intentional pressure on the Florida secondary. If they mess up, it most likely means a touchdown for the opponent. That’s the message he has preached since his first day of spring practice at Florida, and it hasn’t stopped in fall camp. Jaylen Watkins has seen the group mature under that pressure.

Watkins Splits Time at Corner and Safety

Jaylen Watkins started fall camp without any idea where he would play. After playing cornerback during his freshman season, he spent the spring splitting time between cornerback and safety. The coaches haven’t told him what position he will play during the fall, and the sophomore doesn’t care either way. He just wants to get on the field.

Looking for a Starter at Corner

In 2009 picking a starting defense for the Florida Gators was easy. All 11 starters returned from 2008 and except for an injury or two all 11 started again in 2009. While the defense returns several starters, one noticeable missing person is Joe Haden, who started at cornerback for three years. Haden is gone to the NFL and so are the two top backups. Cornerback will be scrutinized this spring.
