Scouting D-backs Prospects #31-35

Arizona Diamondbacks prospects #31-35 each played all of their 2009 season at one of the Single-A levels. Such players can be difficult to gauge based on their statistics, as the talent they face can vary significantly. This is where scouting a player's mechanics, makeup, and approach becomes paramount.

The South Bend Silver Hawks finished
the 2009 season with a .431 winning percentage, yet slipped into the postseason
for a seventh consecutive year anyhow. It was a good experience for a very
young-yet-talented team.

Justin Parker Led South Bend Despite Injury

Justin Parker was among the South Bend Silver Hawks' best offensive players at the end of May, with 13 doubles, 19 walks, 22 runs, 19 RBI, and a .313 batting average. Then Parker dislocated his shoulder, sidelining him for a few weeks. He battled back despite being nowhere near 100%. His production was limited, yet Parker remained a clubhouse leader and led a very young team into the postseason.

Despite having lost 17 of 21 games to the Fort Wayne TinCaps this year and needing to win two straight road games against them to advance in the postseason, the South Bend Silver Hawks still have the mentality of a team that can orchestrate an upset.

Ramon Ramirez Wins It in the 15th

The South Bend Silver Hawks had only one player return this year from their 2008 division-winning club: infielder Ramon Ramirez. While Ramirez hasn't posted gaudy numbers this year, his veteran savvy has allowed him to come up with some big hits. None have been bigger than his game-winning single in the 15th inning of South Bend's 3-2 win over Beloit Wednesday night.
