STARKVILLE, Miss. – Three former Mississippi State football players – K.J. Wright, Pernell McPhee and Chris White – were selected in the National Football League draft on Saturday. The trio joins Derek Sherrod, who was picked in the first round on Thursday night. The four players drafted mark the most Bulldogs picked in a single year since four were selected in 2001.

From The Dawghouse

To again borrow kindly old Professor Tolkien’s concluding line from his Ring epic, “Well, I’m back.” Yep, back in…well, I was about to say back in Bulldog Country, but then as we saw last week those borders suddenly spread much farther afield these days. Reckon there’s many a northeast Florida merchant longing for our eventual return?

Wright, Dog Defenders Ground Wolverines

Players can talk about reading and reacting. But that’s exactly what K.J. Wright and his fellow Bulldog linebackers were doing Saturday afternoon. They was reading how Michigan’s offense lined up, reacting accordingly…and making it pay off with three shutout quarters in Mississippi State’s 52-14 Gator Bowl victory.

It was all very pleasant what with the limited practice duties and minimal exertions. Still Chris White admits, he’d become just a little antsy of late. Bored, even. “It’s been nice to be able to relax a little bit. But now we start back at work.”

Still the Gator Bowl’s chief executive welcomed adding another, white one, to his office collection. Catlett was presented the newer model Monday, appearing at Mississippi State to formally welcome the Bulldogs to their New Years Day bowl.

White Wins A Trophy Worth Mounting

Even now, after having his name and number, and for that matter his numbers, shown on TVs across the land, Chris White remains low-key about his origins. “When people ask where I’m from I don’t say Vancleave, I say south Mississippi. If they really want to know they can ask again.” Well, expect them to ask, after White was named winner of the award given to the best player in the whole state.

From The Dawghouse

It was a year ago Tuesday and I’d just had a quick Q&A with Dan Mullen. While awaiting presentation of the Conerly Trophy in casual conversation, I mentioned a trivia tid-bit; that he’d just become only the third Mississippi State coach in seven decades to win his debut against Ole Miss. Mullen paused, half-grinned, and responded with these exact words: “Who’s the last to win his first two?”

When I was falling I tried to keep my balance, the ground was slick and I slid about five or six yards. I saw the goal line and tried to stretch out to get the touchdown, just trying to make a play.”

Big-Play Tide Strikes For 30-10 West Win

The final line showed Alabama putting up an impressive 452 yards, easily the most surrendered by Mississippi State all this season. Except the really impressive part was, most of those gains didn’t matter. It was the 179 yards the Crimson Tide tallied on just three separate plays, all for touchdowns, that counted most towards the 30-10 victory.
