Gators ignore stats, run well on FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The statistics weren’t in Florida’s favor. Florida State came into Saturday with the nation’s top rush defense, allowing 70.6 yards per game and 2.3 yards per carry. The Gators ran for 244 yards at Doak Campbell Stadium, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. It didn’t surprise head coach Will Muschamp as much as the stats suggested. Florida knew it could run the ball.

Quiet Gillislee closing out senior year

Mike Gillislee didn’t realize what his t-shirt said. When the senior running back made a rare appearance to talk to the media, he stepped to a podium in a shirt that spoke more about the type of player he is than any words he could have said. ‘Run more than your mouth.’ That hasn’t been a problem for the soft-spoken Gillislee. The senior is ending his career in Gainesville with a strong season.

Quiet Gillislee leading Florida offense

Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease started to build his relationship with Mike Gillislee soon after getting to Gainesville, and it didn’t take long to realize he would be the face of the Florida run game. Gillislee isn’t vocal and doesn’t enjoy talking to the media. When talking to his coordinator, that’s not the case. Pease appreciates how humble and selfless the senior back has remained.

Pease Not Surprised by Gillislee Success

Brent Pease said running back Mike Gillislee practiced on Monday after suffering a groin injury at Texas A&M. Pease wasn’t specific with the number of reps Gillislee took, but the Gators are being careful with his touches this week. The senior has made his mark on the Florida offense through the first two games of the year, and as the Gators prepare for Tennessee, he’s an important part of it.

Gillislee Capitalizes on Long-Awaited Chance

When Mike Gillislee signed with Florida in February of 2009, his first day as the starting running back was on his mind. He just didn’t know it would take so long. After waiting through three seasons in Gainesville, Gillislee started his senior year by taking advantage of his chance to start by carrying the ball 24 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns in Florida’s win to open the season.

Video Recap: Gators Defeat Bowling Green

The Gators emerged victorious from their season opener, but the 27-14 victory was far from pretty. Although Jeff Driskel took most of the snaps, the quarterback mystery remains. Florida continued to struggle on an area of emphasis: penalties; racking up 14 penalties for 106 yards. The run-game seemed to be the saving grace of the offense & running back Mike Gillislee was the biggest contributor.

Gillislee Gets His Chance

Anyone that has followed Florida football in recent years usually asks the same question—When will Mike Gillislee earn his chance? It his final season at Florida, but that chance will come in 2012 for the senior. Fans have clamored for more touches for Gillislee, but the lack of carries could be attributed to pass blocking. It’s a big part of why he hasn’t always been on the field.

Spring Evaluation: Running Back Shined

The Florida Gators have to replace a lot of talent from a 2009 squad that finished third in the country. One spot they don’t have to replenish is at running back as the Gators return everyone and will add a freshman into the mix in June. This spring was really all about one guy. Sophomore Mike Gillislee was a workman and needed the time to get to know the offense. He did just that.
