Navy Recruiting Gets Big Boost from Big East

The college football season officially ended Monday night, but for Division 1 schools like the Naval Academy, the recruiting season is about to enter the fourth quarter. Fortunately, Navy’s coaches have a few “go to” plays on the trail this January, and plan to make the most of exposure received from a pending move to the Big East conference, as well as an acclaimed documentary from Showtime.

Army-Navy Game Vital for Recruiting

They say it’s the most important game of the season. As this year’s de facto bowl game for both Army and Navy teams which have underperformed, Saturday’s annual rivalry will be for all the marbles. But the game’s importance extends beyond the symbolic. Center stage before an entire nation of prep football players, the game is by far the biggest recruiting tool Army and Navy wield.

I get it. You’re upset. You’re disappointed. One might even say you’re heartbroken. And you’ve got every right to feel that way. Your team has lost four straight – and after 8 seasons of winning, going to bowl games, and dominating their rivals, Navy’s players and coaches now face the real possibility of sitting on their butts this December. So what are you going to do about it?

At 2-3, Navy still far cry from 2002

Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo is normally an even keel guy, even following a loss. But after Navy’s 63-35 "whooping" to Southern Mississippi on Saturday, the fourth year headman showed some fire, defiantly rejecting concern that the program’s three-game skid may be indicative on something more.

I didn’t know what to expect when walking into the postgame conference on Saturday night. I had covered Navy losses – even heartbreaking ones – before, but the 24-21 defeat to 10th ranked South Carolina went beyond heartbreaking. At least, that’s how it looked from the press box, where a stunned collection of South Carolina beat writers sat wide-eyed and confused. They should have known better.

Navy played their most complete game of the year dominating Notre Dame in a surprisingly easy 35-17 win at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. Navy opened the game with a terrific defensive goal line stand to stuff the Irish on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line. Navy then drove 99 yards for a touchdown. The Mids proceeded to score touchdowns on five of their first six possessions.
