Cougar defense looks to right itself

With a backup quarterback, Oregon State’s offense passed for 332 yards against BYU’s secondary. The Beavers added another 118 yards on the ground, and when it was all said and done, scored 35 offensive points against what was considered a very good BYU defense. So what happened?

A common thread between BYU and BSU

In the early years under head coach LaVell Edwards’ tenure, BYU rose from the ranks of college football obscurity and onto the big stage with an innovative and revolutionary offensive passing system. Since that time, BYU has been able to bring in great talent into the program as schemes catch up and progress. Boise State has followed a similar path.

Cougar defense turning focus to Boise State

The BYU defense was very successful against Utah’s offense, and being that the offense wasn’t at full strength, it was expected. Boise State’s offense should be at full strength come Thursday’s contest and will be more potent than what the Cougars faced last Saturday.

Interchangeable linebackers

We’ve seen it with the offensive line, where players are being switched around and cross-trained. Now the same approach is being applied to the outside linebacker position, where Alani Fua and Spencer Hadley have been battling. Regardless of who will be starting, Coach Poppinga wants his players developed to be interchangeable on both sides.

Hadley adjusting to new position

The great Yoda once told Luke Skywalker, “You must unlearn what you have learned.” Believe it or not, this is brought up for a reason. It’s akin to what junior linebacker Spencer Hadley is experiencing. Having moved from middle linebacker to outside linebacker, he’s having to forget what he previously learned and play a new way, but doing so may very well earning him a starting spot.

BYU coaches tweaking linebacker group

Next season, Coach Mendenhall’s defense will return a very talented, experienced and proven group of linebackers, which will make up the core of his defense. With outside linebackers Jameson Frazier, Jordan Pendleton and Jadon Wagner having graduated, that position just got a little more competitive.

Middle linebacker coverage in the 3-4 defense

During the TCU game the middle linebackers were given the difficult task of covering fast Horned Frog receivers out in the flats. The results were frustrating for BYU fans everywhere, leading to them questioning everything from player ability to the effectiveness of the scheme. However, the reasons behind the struggles might not be that simple.

Hadley looking to add his talents

It’s never a sure thing how soon a returned missionary can get back into shape in order to contribute to the team. Some never reach that point, while some exceed expectations and contribute almost immediately. A week-and-a-half into spring practices, Spencer Hadley looks to be the latter of the two.

Hadley Flies Under the Radar

Cougar signee Spencer Hadley hails from Connell in rural Washington, which lies very much out of the way of the view of most college recruiters. That being the case, Hadley’s dominant play in high school went relatively unnoticed. But one school did notice Hadley, and that was all he really wished for as he prepares to make an impact at the next level.

SEATTLE - The Scout.com Northwest Hot 100 can now be put to bed for the class of 2008. Spanning five states and one province, there are 27 schools represented, from BCS conferences all the way down to NAIA Division-1. The top-20 didn't change much, but there was a new entry into the top-25, and the Oregon State Beavers had the two biggest risers in the group.
