Cougar Conversations: Haws and Davies

While the Cougars won't be in the NCAA tournament for the first time since Coach Rose's first season as head coach in 2005-06, they are nevertheless happy to be able to keep playing. On Tuesday they'll host the Washington Huskies, who feature former Pleasant Grove guard C.J. Wilcox. Listen to what Tyler Haws and Brandon Davies had to say about Wilcox, the opportunity to play more games, and more.

Cougars reflect on Senior Night

Barring a potential home game in the NIT, Thursday night will be the last home game for three BYU seniors. In addition, two other players will be honored on Senior Night. Getting a win against No. 2 Gonzaga – the highest-ranked team to ever play in the Marriott Center – will be extremely tough but would make for an unforgettable Senior Night.

Brandon Davies is coming off one of his best performances in a while after scoring 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting against Portland last Saturday.
Davies, Cougars fired up for Saint Mary’s

The Cougars have been on a bit of a roll lately, having won six consecutive games (longest winning streak since two seasons ago) while getting more balance and improved shooting. However, Wednesday night’s home game against Saint Mary’s will be a big measuring stick for the Cougars, who are eager to avenge a season-sweep by the Gaels last year.

When the Cougars begin postseason play on Friday against either Pepperdine or San Diego, they will do so with a number of players that didn’t participate during last year’s postseason. One such player – midyear transfer Matt Carlino – was redshirting, while another – Brandon Davies – had just been suspended. This year, however, they will get their shot to lead BYU to postseason glory.

Just what the doctor ordered

Brandon Davies’ breakout performance against Creighton – all 24 points of it – almost didn’t happen. The sophomore post player picked up his third foul early in the second half, and Coach Rose said he thought about pulling him out. Instead, he decided to let him keep playing, and that decision could ultimately have a big impact on BYU’s season.

Youth was served Wednesday as the Cougars beat rival Utah in Salt Lake City. Although BYU’s starters and Jonathan Tavernari combined to go a paltry 5-of-28 from the field, the Cougars were still able to earn their largest margin of victory ever in the Huntsman Center thanks to the play of sophomore Michael Loyd and true freshman Brandon Davies. Their play has Cougar fans excited about the future.

Davies Healing Nicely

The Cougar hoopsters have had bad luck when it comes to health this year. Their health problems have ranged from inconvenient (Jimmer Fredette’s mono) to life-threatening (Coach Rose’s pancreatic cancer). Freshman center Brandon Davies recently had health problems of his own, having had to undergo an appendectomy. Fortunately, like Fredette and Rose, Davies appears to be healing nicely.

Cougar Conversations: Brandon Davies

Starting Division I basketball wasn't a big move for Brandon Davies in the literal sense, as he played his high school ball right across the street from BYU's campus at Provo High School. But, that doesn't mean it hasn't been a big adjustment for the Cougars' newest big man. Davies talked to Total Blue Sports about getting a lot of minutes early and about the upcoming Utah State game.
