Carlino and the Cougars coming along

As great as it is to have players that can go off for 42 points (Tyler Haws) or 33 (Brandon Davies), it’s important to have a team full of players that can come in and take away some of the burden by making plays. BYU hasn’t had that much this year, leading to trouble when Haws and/or Davies have struggled. But lately some others have been stepping up, most notably Matt Carlino.

Carlino striving for more

At times last season as a redshirt freshman, point guard Matt Carlino looked like he could be the second coming of Jimmer Fredette. But at other times, he looked like, well, a freshman. Coach Rose has praised his consistency since practices started last month, and said he thinks he's ready for a breakout season. Carlino, meanwhile, expects to be better in large part because of his teammates.

Cougars eager for time to shine

When the Cougars begin postseason play on Friday against either Pepperdine or San Diego, they will do so with a number of players that didn’t participate during last year’s postseason. One such player – midyear transfer Matt Carlino – was redshirting, while another – Brandon Davies – had just been suspended. This year, however, they will get their shot to lead BYU to postseason glory.

Enter the point guard

BYU has already started three different point guards this season, and though that number won’t increase this Saturday against Baylor, it’s likely only a matter of time until UCLA transfer Matt Carlino takes over. Finally eligible after being at BYU for about a year, he has the opportunity to take his place as the heir apparent to Jimmer Fredette, and it all starts against the nation's No. 6 team.

Meet the future

When it comes to size, Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery are on the relatively small side of the spectrum when compared to many basketball players. But, when they leave after this year, they will leave some Shawn Bradley-sized shoes to fill. Arguably one of the nation’s best guard tandems and BYU’s best ever, their replacements are currently at BYU taking notes and preparing to take over.

BYU a Great Fit for Carlino

Matt Carlino’s early college career has seen a lot of changes, as he’s struggled to find the right fit for him. He firmly believes that he’s found that right fit at BYU, however, and chose to sign with the Cougars over St. Mary’s, Butler and UNLV. The hope is that he’ll fill in immediately at the point guard position when he becomes eligible to play.

Matt Carlino to Transfer to BYU

BYU lands a very promising point guard prospect who will likely be asked to fill-in immediately at one of the guard spots next season. Matt Carlino's college career has been a bit turbulent at this point, but he hopes to have found a home at BYU.
