Donovan and players talk Sweet-16 win

Casey Prather and the Florida bench did their job Friday night in the 62-50 win over Florida Gulf Coast. Prather joined Mike Rosario and head coach Billy Donovan on the stage to talk to the national media about the contest and quite a bit about the Eagles.

Prather continues to impress

At least once a game, Casey Prather reminds the crowd of what he can be. The junior forward is starting to harness and show that athleticism more consistently. It used to flash every once in a while during practice or in the few minutes Prather was able to play, but now healthy and understanding his role off the bench, he is giving the Gators what they need — energy and athleticism.

Prather brings energy off the bench

The Gators don’t need points out of Casey Prather. Since the loss of forward Will Yeguete for the remainder of the regular season, Florida has needed Prather to bring energy and do the little things that made Yeguete invaluable. In the two games Yeguete has been out, Prather has posted a season-high 12 points in each of them, but that’s not where his true value to the Gators comes.

Prather's will helps replace Yeguete

Florida head coach Billy Donovan said Thursday that Casey Prather still wasn’t comfortable after returning from a high ankle sprain. He was timid in practice and tentative with the ball instead of the aggressive player that was creating a role for himself before the injury. A conversation with athletic trainer Duke Werner before Saturday’s game against Mississippi State changed that.

Prather proves worthy of start

Casey Prather found out on Wednesday morning that he would be starting Florida’s Southeastern Conference opener. Fractured ribs for Erik Murphy and knee tendonitis for Will Yeguete pushed Prather into the starting lineup, and he saw it coming after Tuesday’s practice ended with both still hobbled. Prather scored the first six points of the game, sparking the Gators to take an 11-0 lead.

Prather makes impact in debut

Casey Prather didn’t waste time announcing his return to his teammates and all those in the O’Connell Center. Eighteen seconds after checking in during the second half, he skied for an offensive rebound, corralled it and went back up to draw a foul. The crowd noticed the effort, but it was the Florida bench that appreciated it the most. The junior has developed a knack for the athletic plays.

Florida has opened the season without two key players. Starting point guard Scottie Wilbekin was suspended the day before the Gators were scheduled to open the season against Georgetown for an undisclosed reason. Forward Casey Prather suffered a concussion the week of the Georgetown game that kept him out. Donovan isn’t sure when either will return to action.

For Prather, hard work pays off

OMAHA, Neb. – It's been an up and down year for Florida sophomore Casey Prather. At times, just seeing the floor has been a challenge - let alone producing while on it. He persevered and stayed the course, however, and Friday he broke out in a big way - with a season-high 22 minutes and career-high 14 points.

Prather off to a Fast Start

Casey Prather knows his decision making on the court kept him on the bench as a freshman. His 6-6 frame is dripping with athleticism that makes him a solid defender, but bad passes and costly turnovers on offense hurt his progression for the Gators. With one season under his belt, Prather is being smarter with the ball and playing well in practice because of it.

Prather Stands Out in Exhibition Opener

Florida head coach Billy Donovan knew Thursday night’s exhibition would be sloppy. The priority was to get young players on the floor, not focus on the units being substituted into the game. The young players got their feet wet, while the veteran players saw their minutes scaled back, as the Gators beat Florida Tech, 92-58.

Prather Is Another Piece

The Florida Gator basketball team was missing a few pieces of the puzzle a year ago. It isn't that the players on the court weren't talented enough, they were literally missing some pieces of the puzzle without enough of them. One new piece that should fit right in is small forward Casey Prather, a dynamic scorer and defender from Jackson (TN). Prather got to campus on Monday.
