WSU greatly in need of returns from injury

WSU'S LACK OF depth was national news a year ago. After injuries decimated the QB position, the Cougars held an open tryout for a scout-team quarterback. Media outlets displayed highlights that featured former Woodinville High signal caller Peter Roberts winning the position. Without the same fanfare, it's a similar situation in '09 as WSU prepares for the Apple Cup.

Wulff not ready to make quarterback call

The Cougars could have their third starting quarterback in five weeks when they play Saturday at Oregon. WSU coach Paul Wulff did not discount that possibility during his Sunday news conference, but added that a decision between sophomore Marshall Lobbestael and true freshman Jeff Tuel won't be determined until Monday at the earliest. Plus, new injury news and much more.

Charting the Cougar weight, muscle gains

THE UPDATED WEIGHTS for the Cougar footballers are in. The numbers, as they were in the spring, remain striking. There are many who have gained 15-20 pounds, and more, since last year. Then there are players who put on the bulk before the spring, then trimmed and repackaged it this summer to add quickness. CF.C charts the progression from fall of '08, to the '09 spring, to today.

Cougar offensive line primer

THE COUGARS RETURN in 2008 four starting offensive linemen, usually a recipe for success in the the Pac-10. And Kenny Alfred is indeed a very big bright spot for the Cougars up front. So why weren't Paul Wulff and new o-line coach Harold Etheridge smiling more often during the offseason? And which position figures to see the highest pitched starter's battle beginning on August 5?

NICK CANTLON, THE fourth-year Washington State walk-on from Spokane, smiled when asked how it felt to be the wily old veteran of the offensive line in the late going of the Cougars' win last Saturday over San Diego State. Andrew Roxas, a true freshman from Sun Valley, Calif., said his heart just about leapt out of his jersey when assistant coach George Yarno called his name to go on the field.

DOBA: Overconfident for UI? Look at the tape

THE COUGS ARE 24-POINT FAVORITES against Idaho this Saturday but Bill Doba says there's one very good reason the Wazzu players should not be overconfident -- the game tape from San Diego State. A number of crimson rookies tasted their first collegiate action in the 45-17 win at Qwest, injury notes, a sure-handed group of league leading receivers at Washington State, plus much more.

MORNING SESSION: Cougs back on the move

PULLMAN -- Washington State players were back on the move at Tuesday's first practice after a day off on Monday. Coach Bill Doba spoke openly after the session about, among other things, an interesting change of pace. Action on the field included a receiving veteran turning in the catch of the day and one of the starting 'backers crashing the backfield so fast he almost could have taken the snap.

PULLMAN--Bill Doba loves to talk football almost as much as he loves to coach it. And when Doba gets to coach and talk defense, well, life doesn’t get a whole lot better for Washington State’s head man. Doba, depth chart in hand, sat down prior to Sunday night’s practice and provided a position-by-position analysis of the Cougar D. Also, some injury news at 'backer, observations, plus much more.

EARLY SESSION: Rough morning for OL, D shines

PULLMAN—Many football fans pay no attention to offensive linemen. Worse, the remaining few a) think they know more than they do or b) need to study game tape before drawing conclusions. Usually, that is. Friday morning, for the second straight day, anyone with decent eyesight and the knowledge that a football has pointed ends could readily see the Cougar o-line overwhelmed by the D once again.

Lesuma well suited for WSU starting role

DEFENSIVE END Mike Graise has this move, see. The first time he puts it on an offensive lineman, they're left grasping at air. Cougar starting left tackle Vaughn Lesuma (6-5, 340) was held out of contact this spring to let his wrist heal but one day the Cougs were going helmets-only and he jumped down in the trenches with Graise opposite him. So Graise busted out his move on the Cougar rookie.

WSU GUARD Andy Roof has been suspended for the fall semester and football season following a series of legal and personal troubles, and o-line coach George Yarno will be forced to reshuffle his already thin unit. Roof, a fourth-year-junior from Spokane, started five games the last two seasons and was expected to become a key cog this year.
BREAKING NEWS: Cougs land OL w/ familiar name

WASHINGTON STATE had only eight able bodies available for offensive line duty during the final spring scrimmage, speaking to a lack of experienced depth up front. The Cougs have recently filled in the gap with an explosive 6-4, 305-pounder who will be finishing up his AA degree ahead of schedule. When the newest Cougar hoss arrives in Pullman later this summer, he'll see one very familiar face.
