SPOKANE – College football players love to “bet” on their final spring scrimmages. No money changes hands, of course -- that is an NCAA no-no -- and “bets” often consist of little more than the right to brag in the locker room for a week or two.

SPRING DAY 8: Cougs have day to remember

PULLMAN -- Head coach Mike Leach’s midmorning decision to cancel WSU’s scrimmage went better than he expected it to on Saturday. Instead of running 110 plays, the Cougars showcased drills for high school coaches from around the state who were in Pullman Saturday for a football coaching clinic. They proved a fitting precursor to what undoubtedly was the most entertaining team session of the spring.

PULLMAN – Rico Forbes is smiling from ear to ear. It’s Saturday and the Cougs have just wrapped up practice. Forbes (6-6, 304) at one stage was lined up against defensive end Matthew Bock and Lyman Faoliu. Forbes had the upper hand throughout the session, ably showing off his quickness. The result is a welcome reward given the adversity Forbes has faced the past two seasons.

SPRING DAY 2: Cougs sharp, QBs bounce back

PULLMAN -- Saturday saw brighter skies and brighter play from the Cougs on the second day of spring practices. The QBs were slinging the ball and hitting receivers in stride all day. A familiar face was making big plays on defense, a new BUCK linebacker continued to make waves and an o-lineman is standing tall. And although we’re only two days into spring ball, one thing has become very apparent.

THE OFFICIAL DEPTH CHART for Washington State this spring is out. The chart figures to be fluid as position battles and competition heat up but among the early notable notes, Bobby Ratliff is the No. 1 "Y" receiver, Rico Forbes and Matt Goetz man the starting right side of the o-line and Damante Horton sits atop the chart at one of the corner spots.

Countdown to Spring: Cougars OL Preview

PULLMAN – The Cougs return nearly everyone on the offensive line this spring. But the squad was undersized last year, clearly adjusting to a new scheme and mightily struggled to protect the quarterback and open holes for running backs. Mike Leach has promised robust competition in the trenches for 2013 -- will we see some fresh, young faces compete for immediate playing time starting on Thursday?

Agile and with length, Seydel one short year ago was a citizen of Westwood, Calif., a Bruin through and through. A few short weeks after enrolling, things went south. What went wrong and how is the Palouse treating the new Coug?

Countdown to Spring: Question No. 1

THE COMPETITION will be wide open this spring across the board at Washington State but perhaps nowhere will the battle be as pitched as on the offensive line. A QB battle tends to get the most ink and the Cougs have one of those in 2013. But no area on the offense will influence the Cougars' win-loss record more this season than up front on the o-line.
